Explore These Hidden Gems on the Costa Blanca

Most visitors to the Costa Blanca go there for its sun-drenched beaches and lively resorts. But beyond the crowds enjoying their cheap Benidorm holidays and Alicante retreats lie beautiful towns and villages worthy of just as much attention.

For a more authentic and reserved taste of Spain, here are four must-visit gems on the Costa Blanca.

Altea

This place has been likened to Santorini, which is high praise. Its old town, known as Casco Antiguo, is a maze of narrow cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses adorned with colourful flowerpots. The highlight is the stunning Parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Consuelo, a blue-domed church that offers panoramic views over the coastline.

A stroll down to the waterfront gives access to a pleasant stony beach and a plethora of shops and restaurants on the promenade. Enjoy freshly caught seafood at one of the many open-air establishments. There’s also a local market in town on Tuesdays.

Javea

Javea (or Xàbia, as it’s locally known) is tucked between two headlands. It’s a town with stunning natural beauty complementing a more laid-back vibe than you’ll find elsewhere on the Costa Blanca. Arenal Beach is very spacious if you’re looking for a beach day with plenty of room for yourself.

The real treasures lie off the beaten path around Javea. If you’re a hiker, there are trails all along the coastline or you can walk up Montgó mountain for spectacular views all around from the summit at 753m. After a day of exploration, head to the historic centre to unwind in its traditional tapas bars.

Villajoyosa

With gorgeous, candy-coloured houses, Villajoyosa is a town bursting with character. It was voted the biggest hidden gem in all of Europe in 2024.

Historically a fishing village, its pastel-painted façades are said to have been designed to help fishermen spot their homes from the sea. The main beach can be busy, but far less than the busier tourist spots up and down the coast.

The Valor Chocolate Museum is something different to enjoy and a great chance to learn about the town’s century-old chocolate-making traditions. The free samples are an added bonus! For a dive into its ancient history, you can wander through the Roman ruins where old and new meet.

The Costa Blanca is much more than its beaches. Try these gems for some unforgettable experiences on your next holiday in the area. It’s certainly worth exploring and discovering a different side of Spain.
