A Pie, a Pint and a Perfect Vibe: The Newman Arms in Fitzrovia

As someone always on the hunt for  London’s best eats and watering holes, I’m thrilled to say that The Newman Arms in Fitzrovia lives up to a rather legendary reputation – the traditional London Pub.

Nestled in Fitzrovia, just off bustling Oxford Street, this historic pub effortlessly blends old-school charm with a foodie edge. From pies that warm the soul to drinks that spark conversation – it’s one of those establishments that makes you feel at home and a little bit cooler for finding it.

Let’s start with the drinks. We kicked things off with a Black Velvet, a bold blend of sparkling wine and Murphys Irish Stout. Although not a beer drinker, this drink feels indulgent yet cheeky, with bubbles cutting through the richness of the stout in a satisfying way. So if you love your ale, be warned I could imagine this being dangerously drinkable.

The menu here isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel but it doesn’t need to. It’s comfort food done incredibly well. For starters, my plus one ordered the Prawn Cocktail – a retro classic that delivered on creamy, tangy, perfectly chilled nostalgia. For me – the Tomato and Burrata Salad was a great contrast, fresh with vibrant and juicy tomatoes and a generous hunk of Burrata that practically begged to be scooped up with the crusty sourdough bread we had also ordered. However, I must admit I wish the tomatoes had been seasoned better and the Burrata was less mozzarella in consistency.

Now let’s talk pies- because honestly – that’s what you come here for. Priced on average at a more higher price point of £20 per each pie, only a select few include accompaniments such as mash and veg. We ordered both  the Chicken, Ham Hock and Leek Pie, which arrived with mash and grilled Hispi Cabbage, along with the Mushroom Pie which arrived solo. The pastry? Golden, flaky, and buttery. The fillings? Rich, creamy and deeply savoury. I ordered the creamy mash because after one mouthful I was certain I needed my own portion. Silky smooth and just the right amount of indulgent. It was the kind of meal that makes you want to sit back between bites and smile.

The setting is part of the magic here too. The ground floor is where all the action is – classic pub vibes , pints flowing and the buzz of afterwork chatter spilling out onto the street or the extended archway. If you’re up for energy and elbow rubbing, this is your spot. But If you’re in the mood for something more laid- back , head downstairs to the lower ground. It’s dimly lit with comfy sofas and has a more intimate, tucked away feel. Perfect for that second date or a catch-up that deserves fewer distractions.

Not forgetting the top floor, where we dined. A cosy-candle-lit space with just the right amount of rustic charm. Think wooden beams, soft lighting and a sense that time slows down a little while you’re there.

All in all, The Newman Arms is more than just a pub- it’s a London experience. The ‘proper’ kind. Whether you’re after a pie and a pint or a place to linger for drinks and conversation, this Fitzrovia gem deserves a spot on your visit list.
