Demand for spooky getaways has hit a record high in 2026, with UK search interest for ‘Halloween travel’ up 85% on Google Trends compared to peak levels seen over the past five years. To help travellers pick their destination, travel experts at Iglu Cruise have ranked the top 10 cities in Europe to visit this Halloween.
The European Hauntability Index evaluated 40 major cities across four key criteria: historic architectural site count, ghost tour supply, visitor review engagement and Halloween night sunset times, to establish an objective ranking out of 100. Edinburgh took the overall crown as Europe’s most haunted city, closely followed by London and Rome.

2. London, England

These tours have received over 6,900 reviews, and the city is home to 102 catalogued historic architectural sites. Notable guided routes showcase historic locations such as the Tower of London, Whitechapel and the West End theatre district.
3. Rome, Italy
Rome secured third place overall, thanks to its impressive inventory of ancient and medieval underground structures. The city received the highest score for historic architecture, boasting 391 documented catacombs, crypts and ruins. Although the number of tours available is lower than in the UK, Rome’s score highlights its significant physical presence of historic burial sites. Notable landmarks that contributed to this score include the Capuchin Crypt and the ancient burial complexes along the Appian Way.
4. Prague, Czechia
Prague ranks fourth overall in the index. The city demonstrated a balanced performance across all metrics, recording 145 historic sites and over 5,600 ghost tour reviews. Sunset occurs at 16:40 on Halloween evening, providing early dusk hours for guided walking tours. Primary tour routes navigate the historic Old Town, Charles Bridge and subterranean medieval vaults beneath the city centre.
5. York, England
York secured fifth place, surpassing several major European capital cities despite its smaller geographic size. The historic city received over 7,500 reviews for ghost tours, indicating a high review density relative to its population. There are 21 active guided ghost walks operating within the city’s historic walls. Notable locations featured in these tours include the medieval Shambles, Clifford’s Tower and the Treasurer’s House.

Lisbon ranks ninth in the European index, largely due to its impressive number of preserved historic ruins and cemeteries. The Portuguese capital boasts 219 catalogued architectural sites, which is the second-highest total in the study. Much of this historic architecture stems from urban reconstruction efforts following the 1755 earthquake. Notable points of interest include the roofless Carmo Convent and the historic Prazeres Cemetery.
10. Brașov, Romania
Brașov is the final city in the top 10 list and serves as the main representative for the Transylvania region. The city offers 68 active ghost and dark history tours, ranking second overall in Europe for the number of available tours. This high volume is primarily driven by the regional fascination with Dracula folklore and medieval fortifications. Many visitors often combine nighttime walking tours of Brașov’s Old Town with trips to the nearby Bran Castle.
Methodology
The European Hauntability Index evaluated 40 major European destinations across four weighted metrics to establish an overall hauntability score out of 100:
- Historic Architecture (30% weight): Total count of catalogued historic cemeteries, catacombs, crypts, castles and ruins per city extracted using OpenStreetMap data.
- Ghost Tour Supply (20% weight): Total number of active, bookable ghost and dark history tours listed on TripAdvisor.
- Ghost Tour Demand (30% weight): Cumulative review volume for top-listed ghost tours on TripAdvisor to measure tourist engagement.
- Halloween Darkness (20% weight): Local sunset time on 31 October 2026 sourced from Timeanddate.com, awarding higher scores to cities experiencing earlier dusk.
Raw metric values were scaled from 0 to 100 using min-max normalisation across the full 40-city dataset before calculating weighted category scores. Search interest trend data was sourced via Google Trends, comparing UK search volume for ‘Halloween travel’ in 2026 against historical annual peaks dating back to 2004.
