Sea Air With a Side of History in Plymouth

Plymouth is famous for its naval and maritime history, beautiful coastal scenery and of course Plymouth Gin!

I didn’t anticipate Plymouth having such an old world charm but I soon got swept back in time wandering down the quaint alleyways by the Barbican with so many nods to its maritime past.  You can almost imagine the pilgrims boarding the Mayflower to head of to start a new life and the matelots drinking on the harbourside.

We stayed in the Duke of Cornwall hotel where our historical journey continued.  Built in 1863 the hotel has played host to stars through the ages such as Charlie Chaplin and Davina McCall.  It still retains some of the original features and boasts a breath taking 4 storey, sweeping Victorian staircase.

The staff here are passionate about their hotel and the service they give.  It was fabulous to go up the tower and see out across the city and learn about its fascinating past.  The hotel is currently undergoing a refurbishment to restore the exterior to its former glory and it will be impressive once done I am sure.

Our room was spacious, comfortable, and spotlessly clean!  I slept amazingly well and was woken with a simple but beautifully cooked breakfast.  It is a mid-range, classic British hotel which is incredible value for money.

The restaurant serves a small but delicious menu featuring favourites such as Rib Eye Steak and Sticky Toffee Pudding all served in the nautically themed, grand dining room.

You will not get bored in Plymouth with the amount to see and do!  There are lovely walks on the Hoe looking out over the Plymouth Sound where you can see the warships coming and going and visit the art deco Tinside Lido.

Further down into the Barbican Harbour there is the National Marine Aquarium, Mayflower Museum, Barbican Theatre and Plymouth Gin Distillery tour.  If you want to get in on the boating action Dartmoor Boat Tours will take you down the picturesque River Tamar.

After dining in the Duke of Cornwall we decided to go on the hunt for fresh seafood.  Platters is an independent, family run restaurant on the harbourside and the Trio of Fish option changes daily depending on the catch.  We had an amazing platter of Prawns, Scallops, Mussels, Calamari, Whitebait, Hake, Bass and Gurnard washed down with a lovely Rose and friendly, warm service.

If you are looking for a value for money, city break by the sea Plymouth and a stay at the Duke of Cornwall could be for you.
