Mediterranean Hot Spots for 2023

Historically, summer holiday bookings are made throughout January, February and March. This being the case, we wanted to know where are the most popular summer ’23 destinations. It made sense to speak with our travel partners Idle Travel, owner Tony explained that the Mediterranean overall is very popular for summer breaks as it offers great value, many all-inclusive deals and anywhere with good family leisure facilities is selling fast.

It would seem that long haul and bucket list destinations are also selling fast. We decided to look at a few Mediterranean hotspots this month, which will be followed next month by cruises, long haul and exclusive all-inclusive stays.

Spain

From Madrid and Barcelona to Valencia and Seville. When it comes to must see places in the Mediterranean, in Spain we really are spoiled for choice. The vibrant cities of Madrid and Barcelona are world-renowned for their arts and culture scene, fantastic food, incredible museums and impressive shopping options.

Seville is another remarkable Spanish city, offering visitors a rich cultural experience, from flamenco dancing to architectural heritage and with so many options, it’s impossible to choose so you’ll have to just visit them all!

One underrated gem is the vibrant, historical city of Salamanca! Most of the city centre is pedestrianised inviting visitors to walk around and discover the heart of the city. Salamanca is a bustling city with lively cafés, terraces and bars, perfect for a relaxing afternoon in the sun.

The historic city centre of Salamanca has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Getting lost in its ancient buildings or strolling through the streets, you will find a city with a rich past, and a vibrant cultural atmosphere.

But let’s not forget Spain’s fabulous resorts and beaches, perfect for keeping families entertained.

Greece and the Greek Islands

Greece is a child-friendly Mediterranean destination and one of the most welcoming places to be travelling with the family. With perfect weather, ‘Blue Flag’ beaches and many activities for children, Greece is a great destination for families.

Home to crystal clear waters and safe sandy beaches, there is a wide range of water sports and beach activities wherever you go. There’s also an abundance of historical sites and monuments, medieval castles and forts!

Greece has always been famous for its good prices and you can certainly stay within budget on a holiday here.

For the adventurous and the explorers, island hopping is perfect! The Greek Islands are all beautiful, loaded with boat tours, wine tours, fantastic hotels, authentic taverners, awesome restaurants and amazing things to do.

Mykonos has great beaches and the best nightlife and clubbing. Crete is the largest of the islands and is rich with beaches, historical sites, hikes, traditional villages, small cities and great tours and Naxos is the most family friendly island.

The islands are popular wedding and honeymoon destinations too. All of the Greek Islands offer something special and there is one that will be perfect for you.

Canary Islands

The diversity of landscapes on the Canary Islands is staggering, spanning dramatic deserts and snow-capped mountains, verdant valleys and towering cliffs. Then there’s the seemingly infinite number of beaches, both black and white sand and these volcanic islands are never dull! All making The Canary Islands the perfect Mediterranean destination.

Tenerife is best for infinite variety. The largest of the islands and best if you’re looking for a broad blend of holiday experiences. It is especially suited to families and couples. Fuerteventura has great wind sports and beaches, this island is windswept, sandy and barren, boasting the best beaches on the archipelago.

Gran Canaria has the most divers landscapes and dramatic scenery, perfect beaches, lively resorts, cultural sites and restaurants worth writing home about.

Lanzarote is best for elegant ambience, is family friendly and has incredibly beautiful beaches. La Palma has jaw dropping scenery and has been declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve for its remarkable scenery – some parts dramatically volcanic, others lushly forested.

Portugal

Portugal is one of the European countries most rewarded by tourist prices, especially for the beauty of its beaches and landscapes. Lisbon and Porto have often been awarded the title of ‘European Best Destination’ and they are both an excellent choice for a city break.

If you are looking for relaxation, sun, traditions, Portugal’s exquisite coastline, reliable weather and fine seaside resorts make it one of Europe’s best destinations for a beach break.

It is also an excellent choice for birdwatching enthusiasts and hikers. If you want to get off the beaten track, discover the Azores, watch the dolphins, whales, walk at the foot of volcanoes, bathe in natural pools created by volcanic eruptions, enjoy the natural hot springs, resource and discover the best of Portugal.

Wherever you decide to holiday this summer, make sure you support your local independent travel agent. Their knowledge of the world and their dedication to making sure you have a great holiday experience is unsurpassed and worth its weight in gold.
