It’s all too easy to overlook the importance of those ‘finishing touches’ when making up your home, but home accessories can make a big difference to how a space looks and feels.
Home accessories don’t need to be fancy or expensive, but they should be a reflection of your personality. While the furniture and colour scheme you choose help shape a room, it’s those little embellishments which really define it. They can be a way of injecting a little fun and personality, to really bring the space to life. Here are just a few ideas to inspire you and help you accessorise your home, putting your stamp on your home decor.
Upcycled paintwork

Painted furniture is all the rage at the moment and it’s easy to see why. The furniture you paint doesn’t have to be brand new, and it can be quite nice to seek out older, second-hand items with a bit of history and give them a new lease of life. Painted furniture is an inexpensive and fun way to add a splash of colour, and you don’t have to go for larger things like dining chairs or tables. If you have old picture frames, vases or plant pots lying around, then a quick lick of paint can transform them into something new. This is a great way to accessorise your home.
Bringing nature indoors

We all know the incredible boost plants can give to our mental and physical well-being. As well as purifying the air around us, research has shown how plants help reduce stress levels, boost our concentration and even reduce depression. You don’t have to turn your living room into a jungle, but bringing nature indoors in the shape of house plants, decorative pinecones or hand-made wreaths is a wonderful way to add interest to a room and improve how you feel.
Decor lampshades for lighting

Lighting is one of the most important considerations for any room, whether you’re thinking table lamps, floor lamps or pendants. Decor lampshades are a fantastic way of showing off your personality, whether you go for electric prints and patterns, something traditional or something really bold and modern. Rather than choose run-of-the-mill lampshades, well-made decor lampshades can speak volumes about you and your tastes. They can also become a wonderful focal point to a room, large or small, elevating the space and adding a touch of glamour.
Making your own wall art

There’s something very impersonal about ready-made wall art, so making your own is a cheap, fun way to jazz up your room. You don’t even have to class yourself as ‘arty’ to get stuck in. Something as simple as making a collage from fabric swatches or framing vintage postcards can look amazing and add some interest. If you are of an artistic nature, then you can really go to town. Try picking up some canvases and paints and let your talents shine because it’s a much more personal way to accessorise your home than picking up a framed poster or print.
Utilise storage areas

Many of us end up with more stuff than we need, which is where storage comes into play. You can easily find furniture which doubles as storage, such as tables with a hollow base or beds with pull-out drawers. These are great for squirrelling away those odds and ends you don’t want on display. For those things you do want to show off, sideboards and display cabinets are the way to go. With these, you can arrange all those ornaments and knick-knacks which are the most personal to you and hold some meaning. If they have value in your life, then they’re not clutter.
