It’s no secret that for many of us, moving house is up there with some of the most stress-inducing experiences we’ll ever go through. After all, you’re often literally moving your whole life, from your belongings to your social life, from one place to another – that’s always going to be somewhat daunting.
That being said, there is a lot that you can do to make the moving process less stressful. From planning well in advance to taking breaks, here’s how to make things go as smoothly as possible.
Make a plan
There will probably be a lot of things that don’t come to mind straight away when you’re planning a move. By sitting down early on and thinking about what you need to do, from booking a van to saying goodbye to your neighbours, you can make sure that you’re covering all your bases. Make a timeline, leaving more time than you think you’ll need for each task. Unexpected things will pop up, and you want to have enough leeway to sort them out.
Consider using a storage service

If there’s a gap between your moving out and moving in dates, as is often the case, it might be crucial to book a storage service. If you don’t have access to a van yourself, or just want to decrease the hassle, then providers such as Kiwi Storage London can pick up your items, take them to storage, and then drop them back at your new home when you’re ready. It might even be worth booking a storage solution if your moving dates do line up, but you don’t want to move all your stuff in at the same time!
Take time off from work
While you might be able to get the bulk of the move done over a weekend, you’ll be exhausted afterwards, and you’ll still need to unpack everything at your new home. If you can, take a couple of days off from work – it might feel like a waste of holiday but trust us on this one, it’s not. That way, you’ll be able to unpack some of your clothes and kitchen things, and start to make the house feel a bit more like it’s your home.
Take lots of breaks

One of the best ways to make the whole move less stressful is to spread things out over a longer period of time. Start packing a long time in advance as part of the moving process, and then on the actual moving days, make sure that you have enough time to take lots of quick breaks.
Even if it’s just a few minutes to have a cup of coffee and a snack, those little breaks allow you to take stock, put things into perspective, and think about what you might have missed or forgotten.
We hope that these little tips will keep your moving stress to a minimum. Make sure that you take care of yourself, as the move can be taxing on both the mind and the body – be realistic about how much you can do, and ask for help when necessary.
