5 Stylish Design Hacks for Any Children’s Bedroom

Looking to upgrade a nursery to a bona fide bedroom for your little one? Perhaps you’re dealing with a lacklustre layout that needs some serious reconfiguration.

Whether you’re looking to upscale storage capacity, add a study area, or introduce zones to a children’s bedroom, there are many design hacks that you can implement to make your next makeover project a success.

1. Bed with Concealed Storage

Overhauling a children’s bedroom that’s short on space? A bed complete with concealed storage makes a great addition to any room. Ottoman beds are one option, but aren’t particularly practical for kids. Instead, go for cabin-style beds with easily accessible cubbies that can be used to store everything from clothing to toys. If you’re feeling creative, you can even create your own. Use cube shelving units to create a plinth base for a bed, then add slats sor a solid base of plywood to take a mattress.

2. Add a Reading Nook

If your child is an avid reader, why not create a dedicated area where literature lovers can catch up on their favourite stories? Look for architectural details that can be transformed into a special reading book. Bay windows are a good choice, and can be readily kitted out with banquette seating. Alcoves are another option. Why not reconfigure a room recess with special seating, built-in bookshelves, and a cordless night light for bedtime stories?

3. Use an Area Rug to Create a Play Area

If you’re redesigning a room for younger users, you’ll probably want to create an area for play. This can be tricky in smaller spaces, but it is by no means impossible. To keep things simple, use an area rug to allocate a space for play in a floor plan. Add personality with bold colours or patterns, and stick to short-pile fabrics for easy cleaning and convenience.

4. Get Creative with Cube Storage

Research reveals the average kid will own 493 toys during their childhood. Keeping an ever-growing collection of action figures and other playbox essentials in check can be a challenge, but with cube storage, it’s easy to stay on top of a towering pile of toys. Keep things simple by using totes and cube inserts to store loose toys, or upgrade to removable drawers and cupboard doors if you’re looking for concealed storage solutions. Older children might want to showcase their collections, so experiment with risers and divider shelves to show off their most treasured possessions and favourite curios.

5. Add a Workstation for Study

Every child needs somewhere to study, even if you’re stuck with a small room. If space is at a premium, think about introducing a cabin bed with an extendable desk surface or invest in a high sleeper with a larger work area beneath. If you have a little more space to work with, hideaway desks are a good alternative, keeping smaller floor plans open for play and other activities.
