A Rejuvenating Spa Break in the Yorkshire Dales

I love a stay wrapped in Yorkshire charm, so I couldn’t help but return to the rolling hills of ‘The Dales’ only a few weeks after my last visit.

The Coniston Hotel Country Estate & Spa is more than just a place to stay — it’s a sanctuary for the soul. This family run estate set amidst 1,400 acres of breath-taking Yorkshire Dales countryside, offers an unforgettable spa break experience where luxury, nature and wellbeing come together in perfect harmony. Upon arrival, guests are enveloped in a sense of calm. The stresses of daily life seem to melt away as the warm, welcoming atmosphere and scenic beauty immediately soothe the senses.

On this occasion my visit was purely based on relaxation so after a busy few days of networking at a press conference, the simple joy of sipping on some vino, wrapped in a robe after a soak in the hot tub, overlooking the endless greenery from my room’s terrace was exactly what the Dr ordered!

Established in 1990, prior to being an hotel, The Coniston was an estate farm shop and tearoom. The Bannister family now run the estate and they have been doing so for more than 50 years. They have developed the property over the decades with the most recent addition of the Nàdarra Spa in 2015. In a building of its own the Nàdarra Spa is a state-of-the-art wellness retreat that lives up to its name: “natural” in Scottish Gaelic. The spa facilities offer a range of indoor and outdoor experiences designed to relax, revive and restore.

The outdoor infinity pools provide impressive views across the surrounding hills and lake, allowing guests to soak in mineral rich waters while gazing over the Yorkshire Dales. This was one of my favourite moments during my stay as I sat and watched the sun set for the day from the heated infinity pool. Indoor features include a thermal suite, aromatherapy steam room, Finnish sauna, Himalayan salt sauna, ice fountain and relaxation areas with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the estate. Plus a good sized indoor swimming pool.

Treatments are tailored to your liking and delivered by expert therapists using luxury, ethically sourced products. Whether it’s a signature Coniston ritual, a hot stone massage or a bespoke facial, each therapy is designed to enhance physical wellbeing and mental serenity.

What truly sets The Coniston apart is its symbiotic relationship with nature as the hotel and spa are encircled by sweeping hills, woodlands and the gentle waters of Coniston Lake which in turn also welcomes local wildlife to enjoy the lands as much as the guests. The birdsong and rustling leaves provide the perfect, natural soundtrack to your stay.

Yorkshire Dales at The Coniston Hotel & Spa

Guests can explore and enjoy walks through the estate’s many trails, breathing in the crisp Yorkshire air or enjoy a moment of quiet by the water’s edge watching the swans. For those who want a more active way to engage with the environment, there are clay pigeon shooting grounds, off-road driving experiences and even fishing available on site.

No spa break is complete without exceptional food and drink and The Coniston delivers on that front too. Guests can dine at Blossom Kitchen, the spa’s own eatery that offers nourishing, seasonal dishes with a focus on local ingredients and wellness. For something a little heartier, the main hotel boasts another two restaurants which serve modern British cuisine made from locally sourced produce. The View is a tad more relaxed dining option that lives up to its name with panoramic sights of the Dales.

I dined at The View quite early for dinner as I was a booked in for an evening session at the spa. I was glad I did things this way round as I managed to have the spa to myself (such luxury!), and soak in my thoughts.

Afternoon Tea is a popular choice for guests and visitors alike at the hotel with a set menu offering an array of perfectly executed cakes and warm scones, plus a selection of clever bites instead of the traditional finger sandwiches. No Afternoon Tea is complete without some bubbles and the staff are happy to pop some bottles for us vino lovers!

The Coniston isn’t just a physical escape — it’s an emotional one. Guests frequently describe feeling lighter, calmer and more grounded after their visit. The combination of nurturing treatments, scenic surroundings, fresh air and fine food creates a holistic sense of wellbeing that lasts long after checkout. I drove home with a big smile on my face and feeling super refreshed, not to mention full up from 24hrs of eating every course possible during meal times!

Whether it’s the warmth of the spa waters on your skin, the scent of lavender drifting through the air or the sight of the sun setting behind the hills, every moment in the Yorkshire Dales at The Coniston is curated for inner peace.
