If you’re seeking a romantic hotel break that feels like a genuine indulgence, the luxurious Hotel Gotham Newcastle is the perfect choice for your next couples escape.
Manchester’s Hotel Gotham has long felt like an institution, so it’s a name that comes with lofty expectations. When the hotly anticipated Newcastle opening was announced, I couldn’t help but wonder if it would capture that same glossy, grown-up feel; only this time in its brand-new Newcastle city-centre setting inside the old fire and police station on Pilgrim Street.
Spoiler: it absolutely does. It’s glorious.
First impressions – the building is the main character

My husband James and I visited for a romantic couple’s stay just before Christmas and it was the perfect setting. Before you even step inside, Hotel Gotham Newcastle impresses. It sits proudly on Pilgrim Street in a striking, Grade II listed former fire and police station (and magistrates’ court), which was built in the early 1930s. From the moment you enter, you can feel the Gotham promise being kept: this is “no ordinary escape” and it has a plush, theatrical energy that’s bold and unapologetically different.
And it’s not just the architecture doing the talking; the building still means something to people.
Outside, we spotted a couple trying to line up a photo and offered to take it for them. I suggested we move them in front of the Christmas tree instead of the smaller side door they were standing by (purely for the better backdrop, obviously)… only for the man to smile and say, actually, that door was his door. He used to be a police officer there, and that’s where he’d come in for work. This small moment grounded all the glamour in real history and was a lovely reminder that this isn’t just a beautiful building repurposed, it’s a place with lived-in memories, that is now just dressed for a new and different chapter.

There’s a lovely sense of story too, as there are references to what the building used to be embedded in the décor throughout. For example some of the funky lights hang down from the ceiling via fire hoses, there is a fireman’s pole in reception surrounded by sumptuous seating, the bar is named ‘FIRE’ and the restaurant ‘SIREN’, and one of the private dining spaces is named after the old fire brigade “MESS’, where firefighters would eat and unwind between call-outs. It’s all done beautifully with immense taste so the end result is that all these little nods don’t feel like a theme in the traditional sense, but instead it’s like a knowing wink that makes the hotel feel steeped in history and wonderfully layered.
Because it’s city-centre, parking can be a bit tricky, so we opted to take advantage and pay extra for valet parking. Although additional charges apply, I would recommend it as we found the convenience invaluable. There was no fighting through the one-way system to find a car park and the whole process also felt very luxurious and it got our stay off to a wonderful start.
A fun little aside: we discovered that local legend George Clarke (yes, ‘Amazing Spaces’ George Clarke) was staying at the hotel at the same time as us. We didn’t bump into him, but I loved the thought that we were sharing the same lift as a man who could probably spot a load-bearing wall from twenty paces. If an architecture-obsessed local is choosing to check in here, that feels like a pretty decent stamp of approval!
The suite:

We stayed in a suite, and it was absolutely gorgeous. It is the kind of room that instantly makes you want to cancel your plans and commit to the hotel life for the foreseeable. Hotel Gotham’s décor in the rooms really leans into that decadent “Roaring Twenties” feeling with emperor beds, Art Deco detailing and a sumptuous bathroom full of with glamorous fittings. The bed (as well as being huge) is the sort you don’t just sleep in, you sink into it, like a very happy marshmallow!

The layout is wonderful; the suite had a freestanding bath right there in the room (the whole room has a flair for the dramatic in the best way), so you can soak while your other half pours a drink and pretends you’re both in an old movie. The drinks cabinet/wardrobe was also genuinely impressive. Because Hotel Gotham understands that romance is also about convenience, in the wardrobe there were fluffy robes provided, plus slippers which you can take home as a souvenir for free. The bathroom was equally dramatic with a seriously good, enormous shower, bold tiling and glossy finishes. Even the toiletries felt like part of the experience as the hotel stocks Argentum products from their exclusive collection, with luxe vegan formulas and a “mood-enhancing” fragrances.

The cherry on top to the experience was the martini trolley. We booked the hotel’s “Moonlit Martini” experience, where you check in, and then wait for Hotel Gotham’s own martini trolley to arrive to your room, with a butler serving a selected cocktail from a limited menu. It’s a whole moment, and I fully support anything that makes a regular evening feel like a film premiere. Do you need a martini trolley in your life? No. Will you want one once you’ve had it? Absolutely!
FIRE Bar and Dinner at SIREN Restaurant:
Downstairs, FIRE is the hotel’s bar and it’s exactly what you want from a Gotham night out. It’s open daily from 11am until late, serving cocktails and classic bar bites, with an energetic atmosphere that leans into live music and DJs from Friday through Sunday. It feels glamorous without being stiff, so yes you can dress up, but you can also wander in after dinner dressed casually and still feel like you belong.

SIREN is the hotel’s signature restaurant and it champions quality local produce, alongside a seriously comprehensive wine list and a confident cocktail menu. The decor plays on the siren of myth (the woman on the rocks luring sailors) rather than in sense of fire sirens, which is a nice twist, and the restaurant feels glamorous and sumptuous with a casually elegant feel.
The service was fantastic from the start and throughout. We started with bread and oil to share; followed Hand Dived Scallops with foie gras, cauliflower and Lindisfarne mead as a starter for me and Craster Smoked Fish Terrine with horseradish, cucumber and dill for James. The scallops were perfectly cooked; luxurious and delicious.

For mains, I had the Butter Roasted Chicken with pan Haggerty, Morpet leek and parsley – winter comfort food but elevated. Crispy and buttery, it was a delight. James went classic Gotham: the 8oz Centre Cut Fillet Steak, with peppercorn sauce. The steak was cooked beautifully and he said the peppercorn sauce was exactly what you want it to be: punchy and creamy. We didn’t indulge in dessert but it is certainly on our list when we visit again.
Breakfast:
Breakfast the next morning is served Chef’s Table style, and there’s a lot going on (in a very good way). From the trolley, there’s even the option of a Bloody Mary or Taittinger. From the table, you’ve got a brilliant spread: fruit juices, cereals, Gotham baked morning pastries, toasted ‘Bakehouse’ breads with butter and preserves, Katy Rodgers yoghurt, fresh fruit, granola, dried fruits and nuts, plus chia seed and blueberry pudding and muesli. And then from the kitchen, you can order dishes like porridge with blueberries and coconut crunch, smoked salmon with crème fraîche and soda bread, grilled Craster kipper with lemon and parsley butter or fried turmeric and chilli eggs with sourdough and tomato salsa.

However, we both ordered the Gotham Full English, because it sounded delicious. It arrived piping hot and beautifully put together, with everything on the plate having that reassuring, local-ingredients quality, with perfectly poached eggs and butcher-grade bacon and sausage.
The verdict: This is Newcastle’s newest luxury hotel (and it’s already got cult energy)
Hotel Gotham Newcastle might have only opened in October 2025 but it already feels like it’s found its stride. It’s pure luxury, a little theatrical, plus completely commits to the idea that staying in a hotel should be fun!

It’s ideal for couples who want a proper treat. And if you’re going to do it? Do it properly. Book the suite. Add the martini trolley. Be the main character. This is the kind of stay where you dress up for dinner, order the cocktail, take the long shower (or bath) and make the most of hanging out in your room because the room is fully part of the experience.
How much does it cost?
Suite prices at Hotel Gotham Newcastle vary depending on dates and demand, but you’re looking at around £535+ for a one-night suite stay when booked as the “Suite Seduction” package which includes a welcome drink in FIRE, three-course dinner in SIREN, a bottle of Taittinger in your suite, and Chef’s Table breakfast.
