A Night to Remember at ‘Taste of the North East’ at The Lord Crewe Arms

Tucked away in a storybook village in Northumberland, the Lord Crewe Arms is already one of those magical spots that feels like a secret you’re lucky enough to know. What brought a London girly all the way to Blanchland, the most northern point I have ever been to in England? The Taste of the North East foodie series!

Lord Crewe Arms Dining Experience

I am always here for foodie experiences and I’ve been to plenty of chef’s tables and intimate dining events over the years BUT having a front row seat with only six other people during Chef Damian Broom’s night at the Lord Crewe Arms, I truly felt like a VIP. Damian is currently the executive chef at Seaham Hall which is another well-known hotel in Durham, where he oversees all the food and drink at the property.

The objective of the event is to experience food put together by some of the most talented chefs in the region and witness them showcase all of Yorkshire’s most celebrated Northern produce with their exclusive menus for one night only. Each evening in the series is completely unique which just adds to how special this really is. Plus, it’s worth noting that 75% of the profits are being donated to Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care.

It’s intimate, fun and has that rare kind of energy that makes you want to put your phone down and just be there. I almost (very almost) forgot to take snaps of each dish as I was so engrossed with the vibes and learning about the journey of my food!

The Lord Crewe Arms is situated in the quaint village of Blanchland in Northumberland, and dates back as far as 1165. Originally a guesthouse for Blanchland Abbey (which is right next door), lots of the buildings original features are still present and have been beautifully preserved. You are perfectly positioned to go explore the moors or Roman ruins from here, or just soak up the nature from the gardens of the hotel where you can sheep spot!

Gathering in the Gatehouse building across the path from the main building, we kick started the evening with some delicious canapés and glass of English fizz, introduced ourselves and had a sneak peak of chef prepping for seven very hungry people! Open kitchens are always so thrilling as there is nowhere for chefs to hide. However, this isn’t an issue for Damian Broom as he has been in the industry for over three decades and brings a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to rival others.

During the evening, you witness all the dishes being put together with clear explanations of each element and how it was sourced, prepped, stored and cooked. It is such a treat to be able to interact with the chef during the service and Damian was keen for all to ask questions.

Fresh from the oven, we were served Japanese Milk Bread with whipped butter, which we nibbled on whilst our mouth-watering, Free Dived Scallops had the finishing touches lovingly applied. It was also the perfect opportunity for me to nod yes to the kind waitress that I would like the wine pairing with all the dishes. An option available to everyone on the night if you fancy the full experience.

For the main event, Salt Aged Texel Lamb roasted on the bone with Ortiz anchovies, cucumber and lovage. I love lamb and this one packed some flavour! It was well rested and oh so tender. I was salivating as we watched chef carve and plate up! Served with the lamb, we enjoyed a glass of Guy Allion Pinot Noir Les Parcs (a light bodied, fruity yet slightly spiced red vino).

Not only did we get to eat some of Yorkshire’s most premium foods, sustainability is high up on the events agenda. With a huge focus on nothing going to waste, our dessert is a prime example as chef incorporated the Valrhona Grand Cru Chocolate with sea buckthorn from last year and yesterday’s bread. The respect that Damian has for his ingredients is really something to admire.

If you’re planning to go, I’d recommend staying the night too then no worrying about getting home and you can enjoy yourself to the max, taking full advantage of everything the Lord Crewe Arms has to offer. Honestly, waking up to birdsong and Northumbrian stone walls is just the cherry on top.

The next Taste of the North East Experience is on Monday 26th May with Jake Siddle on the hobs.
