How to Declutter Before Moving House

If you’re planning to move house in the near future, it’s vital that you get the house you’re selling tidied. Doing so is beneficial for a range of reasons.

Let’s take a look at the process, why you might want to do it, and how you might go about a declutter before moving house.

Why decluttering is necessary

A thorough declutter confers many advantages. First, you’ll be able to throw away a lot of junk you don’t really need. Second, you’ll be able to provide your local charity shop with things that they might be able to sell, or you might sell things yourself and profit directly. Finally, decluttering will provide a mental catharsis. Once you’ve gotten used to throwing things away, you’ll be able to eliminate some of the harmful psychological effects of hoarding behaviour!

Naturally, it’s better to declutter before a move than after it – since that way, you’ll have fewer things to carry with you to your new place.

Getting motivated and setting a timescale

Decluttering an entire house can be a daunting task. You can make it less so by breaking it down into more manageable chunks. Make sure that you’ve got enough time to do everything, by setting out a timetable and getting started, long before the day you’re supposed to move. Once you have a deadline in place, and know exactly how much decluttering you need to do each week, you’ll be much more motivated to actually get on with it.

Do one room at a time

You’ll be more able to keep track of your progress when you’re doing just one room at a time. That way, you’ll have the satisfaction that comes with knowing that the decluttering is genuinely getting done, and that you’re not leaving anything behind.

Create Different Piles

The items that you’re removing should be divided into three piles, ideally. First, you’ll want to earmark the stuff you’re going to throw away. This is the stuff that isn’t going to be useful to you, or to anyone. The other two piles contain the things that might be useful to someone. One is to be sent to your local charity shop, the other is for you to sell directly. If you think that you’ve found a high-value item that you can easily move on, then put it in the ‘sell’ pile. Smaller items might go in the ‘donate’ pile. If there are any large items that you need to move to your new property, then you can use an international shipping service to get them there – even if you’re moving overseas.

Use up consumables

In the days and weeks leading up to your move, you’ll want to consume everything in the house. There’s no point in buying food, toilet paper, or air freshener in large quantities when you can simply replenish your stock after the move.
