First Time Parents – Things to Think About

While there are so many things to think about when becoming first time parents, one lesson is to pay attention and be patient with yourself. If your newborn enjoys being massaged in a certain way then trust your instincts. You are the one that gets to spend most time with your baby so use it well.

Reading positive birth stories can also be incredibly helpful for first time parents. These stories provide encouragement, insights, and reassurance, helping you feel more prepared and confident as you embark on this new journey.

They will grow up so fast that you may end up missing the early days as you spent too much time worrying about whether you were doing the right thing or not. In this guide, we will look at the things to consider for first time parents.

Baby Feeding

One of the first things you will note is that your baby will certainly be hungry. Those newborns will take the bottle or nurse around every two to three hours. For formula-fed newborns, make sure that you visit Sell Formula as they can lose around 5% of their body weight during those crucial first few days. Breastfed newborns, over the same period, may lose around 7 to 10% of their body weight so pay attention to their feeding habits.

Back To Sleep

One of the most crucial aspects of learning how to embrace parenthood is to ensure that both you and the newborn get some sleep. Importantly, babies should always sleep on their backs on a baby mattress designed for newborns and made from natural materials. Make sure that you alternate the direction of your baby and their head as they lay in their crib every night. That could be facing one direction on even days only to switch to the opposite direction on odd days.

Changing the direction of the baby should help stop flat spots from appearing on the head. This is due to their gaze pointing in various directions. By alternating that direction, you can also build their neck muscles as both sides of their neck will be activated. Understanding the baby wake window by age can aid parents in establishing effective sleep routines suited to their infant’s developmental stage, promoting better sleep for everyone in the household. If sleep challenges persist, consulting a baby sleep consultant can provide expert guidance tailored to your child’s needs.

Baby Massaging

When they are awake, a great way to bond with your newborn is to try a baby massage. As well as being comforting, this can assist with the development of a baby’s senses and boost your confidence. Judge by their reactions to see if they are enjoying the massage and work out what they enjoy the most.

Tummy Time

Tummy Time begins as soon as your newborn gets home after the birth from the hospital. Try to go from tummy to chest or tummy to tummy though adapt your moves to find a comfortable compromise. This should also be used as an opportunity for first time parents to embrace skin to skin contact.

Ask The Experts Your Questions

During your pregnancy, and the birth itself, you should be surrounded by experts so learn from their wisdom. If you are becoming a parent for the first time then nurses can show you how to do the basics. At most hospitals, you should be able to find lactation consultants to assist with feeding. Then there are doctors to answer more specialist questions that should be particular to your newborn.

There is no such thing as a bad question so do not be afraid to ask them. Ask your pediatrician various questions and keep increasing your knowledge. That could be friends and family that have kids of their own so you can be sure to trust them. Build up a support network as there may be days and periods when you need some friendly advice.

Communication

It will be a while before your baby is able to talk but they can still communicate in the meantime. If they are crying then this can mean that they are tired, hungry, or simply upset. Give yourself some time and you should be able to work out what each type of cry means and how you can comfort them. Before they do start crying, talk to them during the day to promote bonding and make them feel safe.

Look After Yourself

While your baby’s sleep and feeding are a priority, do not forget to look after yourself. Do what works for you, your baby, and your family as you may make mistakes. As long as you learn and give yourself some breaks too then it should be a rewarding experience.

It can be stressful becoming a first time parent as there are so many things to consider. From feeding to making sure that they sleep properly, massaging, and communication. Make sure that you ask several questions before you start to worry as soon as your newborn arrives home. Write down notes but you should be able to learn on the job too as they grow up.
