International Hairdressing Award for Salon54 in North Yorkshire

Occasionally we come across an award winner that we want to shout about, Emma Simmons is that person.

Salon54 is a quietly unassuming salon, in the North Yorkshire town of Thirsk. It’s not a city town, nor is it a particularly large town, but it is a town with an internationally awarded hairdresser.

Words by Rachel McAlley

Emma Simmons, Creative Director and owner of Salon 54 has been cutting, styling, and colouring hair for a couple of decades and she’s still only in her early 40s. Emma recently took part in the International Hairdressing Awards and came first out of over 600 entries. She won the coveted title of Best International Women’s Commercial Collection. Now that’s something for Thirsk to shout about! Emma is the only winner residing in Yorkshire, and one of only three UK winners.

In a very difficult year, marked by the pandemic, the International Hairdressing Awards managed to remain a global event, which brought together more than 600 photographic collections, from hair professionals around the world. Hairdressers from 44 countries entered their work for the categories of Best International Women’s Collection, Best International Men’s Collection and Best International Avant-Garde Collection, plus International Hairdresser of the Year and International Artistic Team of the Year. The winners were announced at a virtual awards ceremony broadcast live from Spain’s Pamplona’s Cathedra.

Emma’s Winning Styles

Equally important are Emma’s and Salon54’s other awards. They include North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year 2019 at the British Hairdressing Awards, Creative Head Most Wanted Finalist for Best Salon Team 2019, British Hairdressing Awards North Eastern Hairdresser Finalist 2020, British Hairdressing Business Awards 2020 Finalist, and she was The 2020-2021 IBA Awards Winner. Plus many more awards have been won over the preceding years.

The creative work of Emma is regularly featured in international hair magazines, including several front covers. The salon recently finalised for Fashion of the Year and Emma for Curl Specialist in the Salon Business Awards 2021. She is a member of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s Project X, plus she is an expert in styling and caring for curly hair – making her salon one of the best and most inclusive in the county.
