Why Unisex Fragrances are the Hottest Trend in Perfumery

The fashion and beauty world has been strongly influenced by gender neutrality in recent times – with men and women’s styles crossing over to become effortlessly androgynous. However, it’s unisex scents that proving to be the hottest trend in perfumery for 2023.

Scents have always been categorised by gender but times have changed and now unisex fragrances are becoming more popular, explains Thomas Gibson, co-founder of designer dupe fragrance firm Noted. Aromas

“Unisex scents are absolutely on the up – and in fact, gone are the days where certain types of fragrances are aimed at a particular gender. You’d find that the floral scents would be saved for women, while the woody fragrances were targeted at men but not anymore.” said Thomas. “We’re also seeing both men and women wearing the opposite gender’s scents.

“This definitely isn’t a new concept but it’s certainly more common now. So much so that just over a third of our fragrances are badged as unisex.

“Our bestseller – Monte Carlo which is inspired by celebrity favourite, Baccarat Rouge – is a great example of a unisex scent because it’s got both the floral and woody notes, combining saffron, jasmine, ambergris and cedar, and it’s extremely popular with both women and men.”

Thomas said he believes it’s the rise of gender fluidity in popular culture, as well as fashion and beauty, which has paved the way for the rise in popularity of unisex scents.

“More and more, young people are exploring new ways to express themselves – and fragrance brands are definitely standing up and taking notice of this, which is why we’re creating scents that aren’t necessarily targeted at a particular gender,” he said.

“Fragrance is not only a really impactful way of expressing yourself but they also have the ability to bring back memories or evoke emotions, which means those lines can become blurred. We’re finding that actually people are choosing their fragrances based on the fragrance itself rather than the gender it’s aimed at.

“Another of our top-sellers New York, inspired by Le Labo’s Santal 33, really blurs that line making this unisex scent a real standout because of its complex mix of spicy, leathery, musky notes.”

Team H&N’s Opinion:

We were very kindly sent a bottle of their best selling Monte Carlo, a dupe for Baccarat Rouge and admittedly for the price point we were not expecting a great comparison. But how wrong were we?!

There was a bun fight in the team, everyone wanted it! It’s possibly the best fragrance dupe we have found and the comments from people asking what we are wearing and “Are you wearing Baccarat Rouge?” have been astounding. We love it!

Well done Noted.Aromas!
