Three Great City Break Ideas For This Summer

It’s been a summer of discontent in the UK. After having the hottest June on record, many areas of the country had their wettest July.

But don’t let the weather put a dampener on your plans for the rest of the summer; there is still plenty to see and do in some fine cities across the UK. Here are three places you should consider for a summer city break.

Liverpool

Following significant investment in recent years, Liverpool has become a thriving cultural hub that offers plenty of attractions for visitors.

The Royal Albert Dock has had a huge overhaul and now boasts an array of excellent cafes, restaurants and bars. There’s also the Tate Liverpool art gallery and Maritime Museum, both of which offer free entry – perfect for keeping your spending down and staying out of any potential rain.

With the Premier League season back under way, a trip to the iconic home of Liverpool FC at Anfield is essential for any sports fan. Get a tour of the stadium and – if you’re lucky – catch a match and join in with a spine-tingling rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

York

city break

One of the most historic and beautiful cities in the UK, York is an absolute delight to visit at any time of year.

Take a stroll along the incredibly preserved 3.4km walls that were built in the 13th century. You can access the path in several different locations, so there are plenty of opportunities to go off and explore parts of the city.

A highlight of your visit will undoubtedly be York Minster – a truly stunning gothic cathedral surrounded by wonderful gardens that are great for basking in the sun.

And no trip to York is complete without a visit to the Shambles. This cobbled street is flanked by overhanging medieval buildings and is believed to have been the inspiration for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter series.

Cambridge

This university city boasts a host of things to do that will no doubt keep you busy on your city break.

If the weather is on your side, there’s nothing quite like punting along the river Cam. You can either share the experience with others or – for a bit more money – get a private experience. Simply sit back and enjoy the views from the water.

The University of Cambridge campus is great to explore because it is home to some architectural marvels, including the Bridge of Sighs, the Fisher Building, and the King’s College Chapel. The Botanic Garden is a great place to spend a summer’s day too – it’s one of many wonderful green spaces close to the city centre.
