As our vehicles stood idle in our drive ways, many of us have witnessed them developing faults during the long lockdown. We all can easily say that lockdown has definitely not been a good time for our vehicles. MOT pass rates have also reduced since last year, mainly due to our cars not being in a roadworthy condition.
However, ever since the lockdown has eased down, people are turning back to garages to get their car MOT tested again. If you are planning to get your car MOT’d after a long break as well, here are some of the simple checks that you can do to pass your MOT test in the first go! If you’re looking for a trusted MOT testing centre, we would suggest you book a professional MOT service in Brighton at KAP Motors or MOT Stockport.

When you take your car to the MOT Centre, their staff is most likely to check the following:
- Vehicle Identification Number
- Registration plane
- Steering and suspension
- Wipers and washers
- Windscreens
- Lights
- Horn
- Seat belts and seats
- Doors, mirrors
- Brakes
- Fuel system, exhaust system and vehicle emissions
Many times, a car fails its MOT because of a simple fault that could have been easily solved beforehand. Therefore, its better you get things fixed before you go for the MOT test.
Make sure to check that all lights are working fine i.e. your front lights, rear lights, fog lights, brake lights and hazard lights should all be working correctly. If you come across any blown bulb, check your owner’s manual to see if you can fix it yourself.
Make sure your horn is working fine. It should be loud and clear so that you can warn other people on the road. Brakes, handbrake and steering wheel should be working properly as well. Your steering wheel should not feel loose and your hand brake should not pull up too high. Make sure that all your tyres are filled with optimum tyre pressure and the tyre tread is according to the legal limit of 1.6mm.

Similarly your windows and mirrors should be clean, secure and intact. Your wiper blades should not be damaged or worn out. If they are worn out, you can change them using your vehicle’s manual. Last but not least; make sure to properly clean your car, both inside and out, before taking it for the test. Otherwise, the tester can refuse to carry out the inspection.
Keep the above checklist in mind; whenever you go for the test and we guarantee that you will have a better chance of clearing it in the first time!
