Using Air Conditioning in Winter: Is It Smart or Crazy?

The autumn weather is now in full swing, and you can’t have failed to notice the drop in temperatures recently. Therefore, it might seem crazy to consider using an air conditioning system at this time of year.

However, there are some benefits in doing this. We thought it was time we explored what air conditioning can do for any space, no matter what the temperature outside might be. To explain further, Dominic Little, Director of Chill Air Conditioning discusses whether or not you should use your air on during the winter months.

Air conditioning ventilation systems

Air conditioning systems are now a lot more advanced than they used to be, which means there are more benefits to having them. As well as controlling the temperature of a room, the other thing that air conditioning units can bring is ventilation.

Your air conditioning is capable of bringing in fresh and filtered air to any environment if it has begun to feel a little stuffy or heavy. It is fitted with a full filtration system, which means that pollen, allergens, pollutants and gases can all be filtered out of the air to ensure that what you are breathing is as clean as possible, something that is important all year round.

We are all aware of how many coughs, colds and illnesses can be spread during the winter, and your air conditioning system can help philtre out many of the viruses and bacteria that will be floating in the air. As air conditioning units can be set to any temperature, you can ensure that your environment is always comfortable and that the air is as clean as possible.

Energy efficiency

In the UK, most of us are used to setting the heating to come on at different points throughout the day when we think we might need it.

However, this is often not the most efficient way to keep your home or workplace comfortable. Instead, you should try to ensure that your space maintains a constant temperature throughout the day.

By maintaining this regular temperature, your thermostat will not need to drastically heat up or cool down at any point, which inevitably tends to use more energy.

This means you can set the thermostat to your desired temperature, knowing that the air conditioning will only come on if it needs to cool the area, rather than it being on at all times. This can lead to some drastic savings in energy, meaning that both your bills and your carbon emissions can be reduced.

Humidity control

Air conditioning systems are responsible for a lot of things, and humidity is a very important element of this. In the winter we tend to run our central heating systems, which can lead to the air becoming very dry and as a result people can start to suffer with respiratory problems, dry skin and static electricity.

The dehumidification features of an air conditioning system can help to regulate these indoor humidity levels to alleviate such issues and create a much healthier environment.

Structural benefits

If you have an air conditioning system, then running it during the winter can help to prevent structural damage to your building. It can help to control condensation, which then mitigates the risk of mould growth and damage to any walls, ceilings or structural elements.

It can also play a part in preserving building materials as well as preventing any excessive contraction and expansion through extreme temperature changes.

So, the next time somebody suggests running the air conditioning system in the middle of December, don’t dismiss them as being as crazy as they might sound. By doing so, they can help to improve the health of the building and all the people within it, as well as saving some valuable money and limiting any damage to the environment at the same time.
