Maintaining Your Home: Expert Tips For Long Term Peace of Mind

Our homes are among the most important things in our lives. They’re where we feel sheltered, where memories are made and where we plan out the next steps in everything from our personal life to our business and career options. So it goes without saying that a home needs to be looked after, in order that it can keep giving us the reassurance and the base for everything else we want to do.

The following are some pieces of advice for maintaining your home and making sure you have peace of mind in the place where you live.

Plumbing: Keep up maintenance and schedule check-ups

A lot of the plumbing jobs you book in will be either emergency or acute need repairs, but it is actually recommended that you have an overall check-up of the plumbing in your home every couple of years, and more often if your home was built any more than 40 years ago. In the UK, that’s a lot of homes. And of course, if there are times in between when you need toilet and drain unblocking or any more time-sensitive fixes, then make sure you have a reliable plumber to call on. You may not think of plumbing all that often, but it’s better to act swiftly when things are OK than pay the costs when the need is more immediate.

Electrics: Leave it to the experts

While many of us can carry out some basic plumbing work, such as installing a new dishwasher or fixing a leaky tap, it’s not recommended that you take on any electrical work by yourself unless you’re a qualified electrician. Electricity is simultaneously of vital importance and also considerable risk – anything beyond rewiring a plug should always be left to the professionals. You should also have semi-regular checks on the wiring in your home; if it develops a fault the consequences can be far-reaching, and it’s a complex job that requires an experienced hand.

Roof maintenance and gutters: Essential on a seasonal basis

Over the course of a year, a home deals with a lot of weather being thrown at it. All of this weather takes a toll in one way or another. Extremes of heat expand brickwork and other exterior materials, while colder temperatures contract it and rain softens it. This is particularly acute for the roof of the house, which is the most exposed part, so it is worth scheduling a roof inspection once a year, ideally just as winter is packing up for the year. This should include a gutter clear-out, as even if you don’t live near a lot of trees, the gutters still manage to end up filled with leaves and other detritus which can put a strain on them.

Maintaining your home is important for many reasons, but perhaps the most important of these is that prevention is better (and more affordable) than cure. So regular check-ups and remedial action before something becomes an emergency is always going to be the best way to go when it comes to keeping your home as cosy and secure as you want it to be.
