Do Shutters Help Reduce Heat Loss?

Keeping your house warm in the UK is incredibly important due to how cold it can get especially in the winter months, and homes in the UK lose a significant portion of their heat because of the windows. That is why it can be useful for homeowners to know ways that they can minimise and reduce this significant heat loss.

It is obvious that shutters in kent are great for their aesthetic qualities and that is typically the main reason why they are so popular among homeowners but not everyone is aware of the excellent benefit that they provide of being able to reduce heat loss in people’s homes.

Energy prices in the UK continue to rise at exponential rates so more and more families are looking for ways to keep that cost as low as possible. So, if you are someone that is currently looking for ways to keep these heating costs down and be as energy efficient as possible then consider installing shutters in your home.

According to a study conducted by English heritage in 2009, they found that with well-fitting shutters the heat loss that they provide through the whole window is 58%. From all of the heat loss methods that they tested such as different kinds of blinds and curtains, shutters on their own are the best way of reducing heat loss through the whole window. Except for one other which is when a home has specifically designed energy efficient glazing and shutters combined which saw the heat loss reduction at 62%. (With the glazing and the shutters both closed)

The crux of that all is that the only way to have a greater heat loss reduction through the whole window than with shutters on their own is to have eco-friendly glazing and shutters together.

You might be under the impression that shutters are expensive but the heat loss reduction that you should see means that they are an investment that saves you money over the long term. When you have shutters in your home it will be much easier to keep the heat in your home which then in turn means that you won’t need to have the heating on as frequently or for as long, meaning that you should see reductions in your heating bill every month.

It is important though that the shutters are installed correctly and by a professional if you aren’t 100% sure of how to install them for yourself and if you want to maximise the reduction in heat loss. Also, if you are going for maximum reduction in heat loss then you could go with shutters that have been constructed from the best materials so that they are as solid as possible. The more solid the shutters are then the greater the reduction in heat loss.

The UK can get very cold, anyone who lives here can tell you that so not only is it important to reduce heat loss from an energy efficiency perspective, but it is also really important from a standard of living and comfort perspective too. It is easy to see why shutters are so popular in the UK, they look great and they come with the much-needed benefit of helping reduce heat loss.
