A Comprehensive Guide to Choosing the Perfect Bed Frame

Finding and choosing the perfect bed frame isn’t as easy as walking into a store and picking the first one you see.

There are a few things to remember when choosing a bed frame, and here are a few of the most important ones.

Budget

When you start looking to buy bed frames, you will notice that the price ranges from exceptionally affordable to wildly expensive. However, it is important to note that quality and longevity are more important than price when choosing a bed frame.

Therefore, you should be prepared to spend a bit more than you first thought. With enough research and patience, you can easily find a frame that will last years and doesn’t break the bank.

Frame Height

The height of the frame can be important depending on your circumstances. For instance, if your bedroom has a low ceiling, choosing a four-poster bed frame can make the room feel smaller and cramped, even if it is relatively large width-wise.

On the other hand, a higher frame could be beneficial if you suffer from mobility difficulties or joint pain. Sitting on the edge of the bed with your knees lower than your hips allows you to get up and sit down more easily, especially if you have severe or even mild hip or back pain.

Base Construction

Frames can have a variety of different bases, each with its pros and cons. The three main ones you will come across are slatted bases, platform bases, and a box spring.

Slatted

A slatted base allows for ventilation to the mattress, evenly distributes the weight applied to the mattress, which can prevent low spots, and is easy to assemble. They are also often far lighter and easier to move.

On the downside, they need to be installed correctly to prevent sagging or breakages, and depending on your combined weight and your mattress, the base may require additional support.

Platform

A platform base is another popular choice, and for good reason. It offers mattress ventilation, is sturdy, is perfect for more contemporary bedrooms, and can also be incredibly cost-effective if you are on a tight budget.

There are a couple of downsides to platform beds, namely, they don’t provide much give, meaning they can feel very firm; this also means they aren’t great for side-sleepers.

Box Spring

A box spring is another common base choice. It provides protection for your mattress, adds a bit of bounce, improves airflow, is super-durable, has storage underneath, and is often on sale or available at a lower price.

The disadvantage of a box spring is that it increases partner disturbance if you don’t sleep alone; they also may not provide enough support, no matter what type of mattress you have. Finally, box springs can be hefty, which makes them much more challenging to move.

Material

The material of the frame can affect everything from the price to the durability, longevity, and comfort, and therefore, it is an important aspect to consider.

Wood

There are many benefits to choosing a wooden frame, including that it is very durable and long-lasting, comes in a wide variety of styles, is easy to incorporate into any bedroom design, is hard-wearing, and can stand up to years of use.

On the downside, wooden bed frames tend to be exceptionally heavy, even if they are designed to be taken apart, the slats removed, etc. Wooden frames are also typically more expensive and can be out of the budget for many people.

Fabric-Covered

A fabric-covered frame is often described as a “safe” choice because it ticks most of the boxes if you are looking for a frame that looks good and does its job. They are comfortable and very decorative, and you can find one that matches your style. They are also a bit more budget-friendly.

The cons of fabric-covered frames include being difficult to clean and keep clean, meaning they aren’t great for kids’ rooms or homes with pets. They can also stain very easily, meaning some marks may never come out if they aren’t cleaned properly the first time.

Leather

Leather bed frames are less common than others on this list, but they are certainly worth considering. They add an ultra-luxurious feel to your space, are incredibly durable, have timeless appeal and style, and can fit into most bedroom designs.

There are a few negatives with leather bed frames, one of the biggest being the price. They are typically far more expensive than other bed frames, and if you don’t look after the leather, it can crack and deteriorate pretty quickly.

Metal

Finally, a metal bed frame is incredible strong and durable, and can last for many years without any problems. They are also easy to style and decorate around, and can fit into a modern, or more old-school-styled bedroom.

Regarding the negatives, the designs can sometimes be flimsy if they are built too cheaply, and they are also prone to loud squeaking noises. They can also develop rust if exposed to too much moisture, and therefore extra care needs to be taken.
