Our writer, Rachel McAlley was invited to experience the newest massage treatment at LUSH Spa in Leeds, The Highlands.
The Highlands Spa Treatment is a 60-minute, full body hot stone massage. It features Highlands spring water, and marble stones carved with ancient Scottish symbols. Moreover, the massage is choreographed to a soundtrack of Gaelic historical folk songs. These songs have been re-recorded especially for this relaxing and reinvigorating treatment.
You will meet with your beauty therapist prior to the treatment, where you find out all about The Highlands massage. Laid before you on a table is the massage bar that will be used on your body. It is a Highland Euphoria Mugwart Massage Bar, with the original, old Lush scent. Also, in front of you is a scarf tied with lots of marble stones nestled inside. You are then asked to feel the stone filled scarf, move the stones around in your hands, and open onto the table.
The Highlands Massage
Once the stones are in front of you, you will be asked to choose three stones with symbols that stand out to you. I chose The Eye, The Village, and The Journey. I was then told about the meaning behind each symbol. Finally, the therapist (Megan) asked me to choose just one single stone to take into the treatment room, I opted for The Journey, which focuses on purpose and fulfilment.
Furthermore, the music soundtrack that is played in your treatment room will take you on a journey across the magical landscape of the Scottish Highlands. You will begin in the beauty of Scottish heather surrounded by nature and birdsong. The Gaelic soundtrack and massage movements will become more rhythmic and vigorous as if hiking up a Highlands-mountain, until you reach the peak with a burst of fresh air. The ‘fresh air’ will be delivered in the form of cool stones applied gently to pressure points on your face.

The massage starts wonderfully light and ascends into a brisk treatment that covers the whole body. Basalt volcanic rock stones are used for the hot stones during your massage. It is as relaxing as it is invigorating, and you will feel a huge sense of calmness once your treatment has finished.
Priced at £150, from Lush. The total price includes a 15-minute one-to-one talk with your beauty therapist about the treatment itself, the choice of three, 250-million year old marble stones, the 60-minute massage, and finally a hot herbal tea and cold herbal water to rehydrate post-massage.
