Every six weeks, this Leeds restaurant gives its tasting menu an overhaul. Six By Nico’s last menu gave customers a taste of Hollywood, and now diners are invited into the Land of Oz.
Inspired by the classic novel, each course is refers to a character or place within the story. Red slipper lover Victoria Reddington tapped her heels together and went to try it out This Wizard of Oz inspired menu.
I love an experience and trying something new, so Six By Nico always tends to satisfy my foodie craving for change! I started off on the Yellow Brick Road with a Chicken Liver Parfait with Pumpkin Puree and Chutney. It was a light but tasty start to the journey.
It was then time to taste a scarecrow. There’s a first for everything with Hay Smoked Middle White Pork, Fennel, Apple and Pickled Mustard. I also had the wine pairing which was a Portal Da Estrela Branco – Dão, Portugal. A lovely accompaniment; the wine pairing adds yet another next level experience and are available as an additional option for all Six By Nico menus.
Course Three was the Tin Woodman and Cowardly Lion. A magical Goats Curd Heart, Sweet and Sour Umeboshi Plum, Liquid Courage. Paired with Aglianico IGT Beneventano – Campania, Italy. This was one of my favourite courses, it tasted every bit as delightful as it looked.
Course Four was the Deadly Poppy Field. A Blackened Miso Coal Fish, Coal Emulsion, Red Pepper Ketchup and Kohlrabi and Tarragon. Paired with Haus Und Hoff, Weissburgunder – Neusiedlersee, Austria. Quite a change from the previous course, but not jarringly so, I am always surprised at how they carefully manage the change up of tastes between course to keep it fresh and fun.
Witch Of The West flew in as the Fifth Course. This was a wicked Chicken Breast, Pressed Leg and Black Onion Sweet Roasted Garlic and Parsley Risotto paired with Borgo Tana Rosso, Lazio, Italy.
The Finishing Touch if you wanted an add-on course included Southern Spiced Prawn and Pork Belly Skewer, Wakame Salad, Seaweed Ranch Dressing. I tried this and would recommend as a delicious finishing touch.
For Course Six, I landed in the Emerald City. This was the showstopper. An Apple Cremeux, Honey Mousseline, Yoghurt Sorbet and Lemon Gel served with a light and moreish glass of Dolce Essenza Frizzante, Le Stelle – Piemonte, Italy. Dessert lovers, you will adore this course.
This Wizard of Oz styled menu has as many flavourful colours as a rainbow and is sure to be hugely popular! With the open kitchen, friendly ambience, stylish décor and exciting menu, I left on a feeling of happy ever after.
The Land of Oz Experience runs from 4th November – 15th December.
Prices are £44 for the 6 Course Tasting, with £30 for Matching Wine.
