Principal York’s All-new Afternoon Tea Celebrates the City’s Chocolate History

After a two-year post-pandemic pause, Principal York’s much celebrated Afternoon Tea is finally back this Spring! Created by new Head Chef Aaron Craig it tells the mouth-watering story of York’s well renowned chocolate history.

York was once known as ‘the chocolate city’, and at its peak over 14,000 people were employed in the city’s famous chocolate factories – including at the Rowntree’s site on Haxby Road, which was so big it had its own fire brigade. Nearby, close to York Racecourse, Terry’s chocolate built the Terry’s Chocolate Works factory. The smell of cocoa still drifts through the city today with the Nestle factory continuing to produce Aeros, Yorkies and Milky Bars as well as some five million KitKats every single day!

Paying homage to this sweet history, Principal York’s Afternoon Tea menu comprises five chocolatey treats inspired by these famous York chocolatiers. Indulge in cakes, brownies and macaroons with orange, mint, nutty, and creamy flavours, all accompanied by the “Big One” – a purple brioche crumb choux sharing bun, filled with hazelnut and caramel.

For a more savoury sensation, tasty classic cut finger sandwiches filled with the finest salmon, eggs, ham or cheese from local Yorkshire suppliers are sure to hit the spot. Epitomising the Great British Afternoon Tea, there is of course also a choice of freshly baked scones served with clotted cream and preserves, alongside whichever hot beverage is desired.

With views across sweeping manicured lawns all the way to the Minster, combined with its contemporary late-Victorian architecture, the grandeur of Principal York’s Garden Room is the perfect setting for family, friends or loved ones to indulge. It was even once visited by Queen Victoria herself!

From April 1 Afternoon Tea will be served daily, from 12 noon until 4pm costing £29 per person. For £34.50 per person guests can upgrade to Prosecco, or for the ultimate celebration, Champagne can be included for £39 per person.
