Taking Afternoon Tea at Rockliffe Hall
If you are in desperate need of something to look forward to in the coming months (when we’re able to enjoy the world once again), or want to treat someone special in the future, then our writer Rachel McAlley would recommend buying a gift card or reserving a table to enjoy the seasonal Afternoon Tea menu at Rockliffe Hall, Hurworth-on-Tees near Darlington.
The Orangery at Rockliffe Hall is a uniquely designed restaurant where guests can enjoy a relaxed afternoon tea with friends and family in a bright and airy open space, yet luxuriously comfortable dining room. Views from The Orangery look across the exceptionally well-maintained, vast grounds and gardens to the distant trees beyond.
The mouth-watering selection of savoury sandwiches and savoury nibbles sit perfectly alongside the delicate sweet cakes and fresh homemade warm scones with jam and clotted cream, and the vast choice of fine leaf teas served in bone china teacups compliments the menu wonderfully.
Savoury treats include; Smoked Scottish Salmon, Horseradish Cream, and Watercress served on Butter Brioche with Caviar, Asian Spiced Chicken served on Rye Bread, Quickes Mature Cheddar and Beetroot Savoury served on Malted Brown Bread, a hearty Pork, Truffle, and Sage Sausage Roll topped with a Yorkshire Relish, and a perfectly risen Mature Cheddar, Beetroot, Carrot and Sage Scone.
Sweet treats include; Nutmeg and Custard Tart with Scottish Raspberries, 72% Chocolate Choux Pastry served with Salted Caramel and Gold Dust, Pistachio and Olive Oil Cake with a Chantilly and Candied Orange Zest, Rhubarb cream in Meringue with fresh crunchy Rhubarb, and a Golden Cranberry and Chestnut Scone to finish.
The afternoon tea is extremely filling, so be prepared to ask for takeout. Rachel enjoyed the Chocolate Choux with Gold Dust, and the Pistachio Olive Oil Cake later that evening.
Rockliffe Hall is just a 20-minute car journey from Northallerton, alternatively if you’re travelling from York it will take just over an hour, or from Leeds city centre it will take an hour and 15 minutes.
