When baby falls asleep against your chest – the most amazing sense of peace

Amawrap, 100% cotton baby slings which promote kangaroo parenting and skin-to-skin contact.

Amawrap was founded by Shabs, who following a difficult pregnancy and birth, struggled to bond with her new-born following this. So she designed Amawrap specifically to help the bonding process of mother and baby and based on the principal of the baby carriers historically used by family members within her African heritage.

The cotton used to make Amawrap was researched and developed by Shabs for over a year before being included in production, this guarantees the softest and most comfortable fit, with all the protection and support needed for both baby and you.

Shabs explained, “All the time my baby had spent in the pram she could have been snuggled against me.  It finally allowed me to feel a bond that I didn’t even realise had been lacking due to the trauma of the first few weeks. But for the first time, I felt like a mummy. How could a simple piece of cloth have helped my state of mind so much? Well I could tell you now but at that point I had no idea about oxytocin, the benefits of skin-to-skin contact, all I knew was this: When you look down and see that your baby has fallen asleep on your chest, you feel the most amazing sense of peace.”

Shabs, along with other mums who had backgrounds in fashion, design and textiles, started experimenting with different fabrics and styles, comparing other wraps on the market, and sourcing in their own fabrics. Local mums started buying from her and she realised that she was in the honoured position to be able to help mums who, like her, struggled initially and needed babywearing to establish that bond.

The news of this wonderful new brand of slings grew, and eventually Amawrap was in a position to be able to have their own fabric created! That and having the slings manufactured within the UK meant that not only was Amawrap contributing back into our economy by finding a couple of wonderful small businesses to work with, but Shabs was able to achieve exactly the type of wrap that she found best supported a baby – exactly the right fabric, with exactly the right amount of stretch.

Amawrap is now one of the most respected baby sling companies worldwide.

What H&N’s Ashley thinks of Amawarp:

With baby one I had the luxury of being able to snuggle up on the couch all day, feed, cuddle and watch box sets. It wasn’t until she was a bit older that we realised the value in the baby carrier we had bought. Even now we still use it when we are out and about. So with baby number 2 on the way I wanted to look more into baby wearing, as days on the couch would be a rarity with a toddler to entertain too!

The Amawrap certainly exceeded my criteria, it can be worn in a multitude of ways, baby can sleep, cuddle and feed in it, it is 100% organic cotton so baby’s’ skin is protected whilst at the same time allowing me to get things done and keep Lucy entertained too! I tried it on for practice as I was worried that it would be complicated, however it couldn’t be easier to use or more comfortable to wear. I have gone for the maroon colour but there is a wide choice of colours and patterns to suit everyone styles.

The benefits of baby wearing are endless, including less chance of the baby blues. Although I will be ensuring I get those snuggles on the couch for an afternoon, the Amawrap will certainly make life a lot easier whilst still allowing that skin contact and close bond with baby. It’s perfect!
