Starlings are small or medium sized birds that belong to the Sturnidae family. These birds are native to Asia, Africa and Europe but can now be found in any part of the world. These birds generally prefer to live in completely open areas.
Starlings normally eat fruits and insects. Most of them are omnivorous in nature. They are also known for creating and producing unique and diverse sounds like car honks or copying human speaking patterns.
But despite their beauty and attractiveness, they are known for causing a lot of problems to those who live around them. These birds are characterized as being quite loud and destructive. They are also known for destroying almost all of the crops around them. They mainly attack crops of grains, grapes, cherries and olives. They ravage all the young plants and saplings around them. They also disturb the habitats of other birds that live in their vicinity.
Starlings are also known for causing sanitation problems. They affect the poultry and livestock facilities and contaminate the food and water of other animals. They are also known for carrying disease-causing germs like TGE, blastomycosis and salmonella that can affect both humans and animals around them.

All these factors considered, it is only natural to conclude that starlings are not much more than nuisances that are capable of causing some major problems, disasters and destruction. The best way of dealing with them is to get rid of their presence from around one’s house. Here are some of the natural ways in which starlings can be driven away –
- Installing spikes in the house – One of the most effective ways to prevent starlings from even entering any house is to install bird spikes or normal spikes in the house. These spikes can be fixed on the edges of the roof, branches or any other areas that are accessible to birds or any other animals. Spikes can scare away the starlings from coming near the building and even prevent pests from infesting the house.
- Get a scarecrow – Scarecrows are one of the more traditional methods of scaring away the unwanted creatures from a place. This is pretty true in case of starlings as well. Installing a scarecrow can drive starlings away. But normal scarecrows will not work in this situation since starlings are not much afraid of humans. It is better to use the scarecrow of its natural predator, like owls, to keep the starlings away.

- Using ultrasound repellents – Ultrasonic repellent devices are available in the market in large quantities and for diverse conditions. There are ultrasonic devices that are made specially to deal with birds like starlings. While these devices may affect other birds as well, they are pretty useful in driving away starlings.
- Prune trees – No matter what kind of trees are present in and around the property, it is best to keep them pruned in order to prevent starlings from making their nests around the house. Starlings prefer dense trees and locations to nest and day safe from predators. They will not get comfortable in staying in such an open area and leave the location.
