The Glittering North Arrives at Raby Castle, Park and Gardens

The Glittering North is a new after dark experience set within the beautiful redeveloped Raby Rising.  An autumnal celebration of folklore inspired by Norse and Viking Heritage, this is a unique event, unlike many other lights events in the North of England and a celebration you won’t want to miss.

At The Glittering North event, you step into an immersion of sights and sounds with a mix of art and culture which all comes alive after dark.

Spellbinding lights and puppets

Expect to see a dazzling display of twinkling lights, puppetry, live music, fire performances and storytelling all inspired by the North’s folklore of myths and legends. A truly unforgettable experience embracing autumn, its colours and the dramatic changing of the seasons. Get wrapped up, grab a warming hot chocolate and take a stroll through the beautiful reimagined walled gardens. You’ll experience skilled puppeteers bringing a series of animals to life while following the captivating trails of lights and illuminations.

From Gullinburstin, a boar with bristles made from gold that light up the sky, to Sleipnir, a giant illuminated horse with eight legs – The Glittering North brings to life iconic figures from the past with enchanting puppetry and illuminating light art. The skill of the puppeteers is astounding as they move so gracefully while interacting with the audience as they pass by.

Refresh and refuel

Weave through the gardens and take in the breathtaking historical buildings of Raby on the way to The Vinery cafe restaurant. Warm up with some of their delicious autumn fayre special menu in the stunning glasshouse eatery with the most exceptional view across The Rising and onward to Raby Castle itself. I can highly recommend the Macaroni Cheese and the Long Horn Beef Stew, washed down with a delicious amaretto hot chocolate or mulled wine – the perfect accompaniment to an outdoor event.

The Gathering

The riding school is adorned with flags and bunting creating a warm and welcoming place to gather with family and friends. Get cosy beneath the twinkling lights and prepare to be thrilled with stories and tales of Norse gods and giant beasts. In the incredible Dutch Barn let the folk musicians entertain you with tunes from fiddles and brass and the fire performers stun with their skill and agility while providing show stopping performances.

Stylish late night shopping

Enjoy some late night shopping in the beautifully curated homeware shop within The Coach House. Open late during the event, you’ll find everything from home and kitchen wares to food and children’s gifts and toys. All carefully selected, it’s the perfect place to pick up something  stylish to take home or grab a few gifts for family and friends.
