Our Yorkshire Shop: A Victorian Restoration New Channel 4 TV Series

It’s all about Peacock and Verity in Yorkshire this June, especially on Channel 4 from Sunday 8th June. The wonderful Yorkshire Dales town of Masham is about to hit the small screen with the restoration of a 300-year-old dilapidated building.

The local community of Masham have come together in unison to help renovate, revamp, and bring back to life the once thriving Peacock and Verity. Back in recent history, the store was a grocer, baker, and tearoom, and this is the aim to see it up and running once again.

Masham’s community team said,

“This ambitious project will breathe new life into a building and the district. The community, with the help of just a handful from outside the town will be blending old skills and materials with modern sustainable construction and create an inspirational regional centre.

Peacock and Verity will showcase working heritage, functions (come to shop and dine in an 1850s grocery and 1910s tearoom), whilst incorporating modern services critical to the local economy including a post office.”

Channel 4 said,

“Our Yorkshire Shop follows the adventures of a group of volunteers in the North Yorks[hire] town of Masham as they attempt to restore their local grocery shop to its former glory, complete with Victorian fittings, stylish café and historic bakehouse oven. Featuring Yorkshire food producers and heritage crafts, the series highlights the impact that grassroots collaboration, local businesses and an appreciation of shared history can have on a community.”

The Community

Each programme within the series delves deeper into the restoration project and the wonderful characters of Masham. Equally, you’ll meet Ian, Elsie, Rolo, and many other locals shining throughout this renovation process. Altogether, proving that communities who work together can produce something fabulous.

Alongside the locals of Masham, there are a number of Yorkshire suppliers and businesses that also help to make this TV show a winner. There’s Laceys Cheese who will be stocking Peacock and Verity with their own locally produced cheeses. Plus, The Yorkshire Soap Company who have helped the community to produce a bespoke Victorian, yet modern soap to sell within the store.

The owners of The Yorkshire Soap Company, Marcus and Warren have produced a Victorian-style Wool Fat and Yorkshire Lavender Soap Bar for the store. A moisturising and healing soap made with lashings of pure lavender that will hopefully make the store smell divine, and give the shoppers something a little different to purchase.

Oli Osborne is helping to restore the original Victorian oven. He’s one of the only members of the team to not be from Yorkshire. Moreover, you can see his boots hanging out of the oven in the below picture!

The Plan

Once open, the building will also contain a number of community-led housing units. Plus, a training centre and heritage education centre that focuses on traditional and sustainable crafts.

Furthermore, everyone taking part in this series wants this heritage building to be an exemplar in the long-term care and retrofit for heritage homes and properties across Yorkshire and the North East.

So, if you want to catch all episodes on the telly box you will need to tune in this coming Sunday 8th June at 8pm, on Channel 4.
