We spent a full day at the RZSS Edinburgh Zoo recently, and what a great day it was. RZSS, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland are a wildlife conservation charity, which own both Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park.
Edinburgh Zoo is only a 10-minute drive from the city centre. There are taxis available outside the zoo, alongside a bus stop for those travelling locally, and a large car park for those from further afield. Be prepared to do some serious walking uphill whilst at Edinburgh Zoo and wear some decent footwear as it’s a steep climb to the top, but so worth it when you get there!

Aside from the zoo having some rare and endangered animals, they also house many animals that you would expect to find at the zoo. And, the view from the top takes in the beautiful hills that surround Edinburgh and large parts of the city.
You can pay for a one off visit, or become a member of the RZSS and visit frequently for a set price. Adults cost £21.95, children £12.80, and concessions £19.95. Carers go free. Membership costs just £70 for adults and £35 for children and you can visit as many times as you like in 12-months, plus you can enjoy a free visit to another zoo in the UK (choose from a list of 12 other zoos). It’s a great deal! Visit Edinburgh Zoo to find out more.
Animals
There are many animals to see at the zoo like lions, tigers, bears, monkeys, chimpanzees, penguins, giant pandas, giraffes, zebras, rhinos and hippo. There are also some more unusual animals like douroucouli, dik-dik, cloud rats, nyalas, pudu, and capuchin. And, there are some that you can see in your local environment or at home such as frogs, otters, wild horses, goats, spiders, tortoises and Scottish wild cats. There is a real mix of different animals at Edinburgh Zoo.
Our favourites were the gorgeous, chilled out giant pandas, the gigantic giraffe in their vast house, the handsome lions in their lair, and the cheeky meerkats.
