What Defines A Gentleman In The 21st Century?

What exactly defines a gentleman in the 21st century? The luxury leather brand Maxwell-Scott has now conducted a survey to answer that question.

First of all, participants were asked about the accessory they would most associate with a modern gentleman. Although many respondents also mentioned a waistcoat and a bow tie, a significant 44% of the respondents stated that a men’s luxury leather briefcase would be the appropriate accessory for a gentleman.

With the development of new technologies, the gentleman of the 21st century is confronted with different challenges and expectations to his predecessors in the past. According to Maxwell-Scott’s survey, 59% of the respondents expected a modern gentleman to refrain from using his mobile phone while dining together. This also coincides with another result of our study, because 80% of the respondents state that impeccable manners are the most important quality of a gentleman even today.

With regards to dating apps, the study participants believe that the modern man, who wants to be seen as a gentleman, should stay away from online dating. 1 in 2 people surveyed stated that, in their eyes, a modern gentleman should not use dating apps. It seems that even nowadays a gentleman is measured by a higher standard than other men, because actually 7 out of 10 couples worldwide now meet each other and develop relationships online. However, the standard does not seem unattainable, as 74% of the survey participants agreed that they personally know someone they would call a gentleman. The term gentleman was originally coined in England and partly also in France. This origin of the word still seems to be present in people’s minds today. When asked where people would expect the most distinguished gentlemen in the world, most of the study participants named Great Britain, closely followed by Italy and France.
