We’re all guilty of making a few mistakes when it comes to beauty, and The Independent reported that more than a third of women have experienced a bad beauty experience while attempting DIY treatments at home.

For 34% of respondents, the DIY kits only resulted in disaster – including frazzled eyebrows, upper lip burns caused by hair removal cream and DIY highlights resulting in green hair. 33% ended up having to see a professional to get their mishap fixed. Common brow mistakes which are avoidable.
HD Brows Stylist, Jenny Shea, has warned all beauty lovers to leave their brows to the professionals after one of her clients used a DIY home brow lamination kit, which ended in disaster.
“Burns frazzled and snapped brows. The picture below is still about a month after using the DIY kit. Her brows are still not recovered.”
We asked HD Brows Lead Stylist, Jamie Long, what the top 10 most common brow mistakes are that people are making to this day.
Mistake 1: Using brow stencils

When it comes to brows, they’re as individual as fingerprints, and one shape doesn’t fit all.
Brow stencils seem like a brilliant idea, but in reality, everyone’s face shape, features and bone structures are different.
Therefore, it’s time to bin the stencils and go for a brow that suits your natural look. We can’t imagine a world where everybody has exactly the same eyebrows.
Mistake 2: Choosing the wrong product
With so many brow products out there, choosing the wrong one should be a mistake of the past.
The HD Brows make up range is constantly growing, meaning there is sure to be the perfect product to suit your look, skin, lifestyle and make up routine.
If make up isn’t your strong point, you can pay a visit to your local HD Brows Stylist who will happily recommend the right product for you.
Mistake 3: Colouring them in too dark
When it comes to make up, less is definitely more. That’s why you should step away from those darker pencils (especially if you have lighter coloured hair) and opt for a colour that will complement your brows.
Mistake 4: Skipping the brow gel

The HD Brows Brow Glue known as ‘hairspray for brows’, is perfect for creating the perfect brushed up, fluffy brow look.
Left brow, no Brow Glue, right brow, with Brow Glue.
You would never go for a blow-dry and leave without it being set, and the same goes for your brows.
Whether you opt for the colourless Brow Glue or the tinted Brow Colourfix, they’ll both hold your brows in place all day long.
Mistake 5: Not blending

Blending isn’t just for foundation. Make sure you apply your blending skills to your brow makeup for a natural finish.
This trick will help to keep your brows from looking overdrawn or too filled in. Remember to gradually build your brow makeup – it’s always easier to add rather than to take away.
If you are not a pro at blending, you can use a Spoolie Brush, perfect for brushing through your brows after applying your makeup to blend out any harsh lines.
Mistake 6: Over-plucking
We’re slowly seeing the 90s ‘thin eyebrow’ trend make a comeback. While we think a slimmer, more defined brow can look great, tread carefully to avoid an over-plucking disaster. This is one of the more obvious brow mistakes.
The cardinal sin of brows is over-plucking, and just seconds in front of the magnifying mirror can cause months of regrowth and patchiness. Due to this, you need a specialist to guide you from botched to bushy.
If you are tired of waiting for the hairs to appear, this Brow Maximiser speeds up the regrowth process, thanks to its proven blend of hair-growth stimulants.
Mistake 7: Trying to make them identical
We all know the saying ‘eyebrows are sisters, not twins. However, very few of us have a symmetrical face, so save yourself the effort of trying to make your brows identical.
Brows are always going to be slightly different, so just go with it. Make sure they look something alike and aren’t completely unrecognisable, as this offers a much more natural look.
Mistake 8: DIY Brows
Next time you’re thinking of doing your brows yourself, just step away and leave it to the professionals. After all, you don’t want to botch them up.
Stylists will be able to recommend and advise you on the perfect shape, colour and style that will suit you.
Mistake 9: Misplacing your arch
The arch of the brow is what helps to open up the eye area, as it gives the illusion of lift and really does help to frame the face. Misplacing the arch can lead to, let’s say, interestingly shaped eyebrows.
If the arch is too centred, it gives a permanently angry look which one of the more common brow mistakes. When applying make up, always try to keep the brow proportions to two thirds (for the front and the main body of the brow) and a third (for the tail).
Mistake 10: Forgetting the baby hair

A lot of people ask how their brows look fuller after treatment, especially when they have just been waxed, threaded and tweezed.
Many professionals have specially designed tints that capture the fine baby hairs that you didn’t even know were there.
The formulas are tinted to match the colour of the brow, so they can be incorporated into the shape, giving a much fuller and thicker appearance.
