Introducing Off Grid Girona: A Rural Open House Reimagined for a Slower Way of Being

Opening today, Off Grid Girona is a new ten-bedroom rural hotel with adjoining four-bedroom barn, set within a restored 17th-century masia in the Alta Garrotxa region of Catalonia. Situated at the base of Mare de Déu del Mont amidst ancient forest and the sweeping expanse of mainland Spain’s largest volcanic landscape, the property places nature, simplicity, and shared experiences at its core.

More open home than hotel, Off Grid Girona encourages connection with nature, community, and craft, through its shared spaces, communal dining, local collaborators and quiet invitation to switch off.

Founded by Gerard Greene – formerly co-founder of YOTEL – Off Grid Girona marks a return to a more grounded life. After years in fast-paced urban hospitality, Greene relocated to the hills above Girona to restore this Catalan farmhouse and build something slower, smaller and more sustainable.

Design and restoration work was led in collaboration with Girona-based designer Ariadna Puigdomenech, with a focus on retaining the character of the original stone building. Interiors favour natural materials such as limewash, terracotta and reclaimed wood, with a neutral palette drawn from the surrounding landscape. Upcycled furnishings sit alongside modern fixtures such as monsoon showers, local stone basins and hand-cut La Bisbal tiles. Products from local makers, including Olively bathroom amenities and Bekume bed linen, reflect a commitment to regional craft and low-impact sourcing.

Food is guided by a hyper local ethos, with the daily-changing menu led by seasonal, local produce. Prepared by the resident chef, evening meals are designed to be shared and are served family-style at the communal table by the pool. Local wine, small-batch coffee, and craft beer are stocked in honesty bars throughout the house, while additional collaborators include nearby producers, cheesemakers, bakers, and a growing network of farmers.

The grounds offer space for both rest and activity. An expansive pool is surrounded by wildflower gardens and shaded terraces, while informal lounges throughout the masia encourage slow afternoons and quiet retreat. The garden studio hosts regular yoga classes and workshops, and offers the ideal setting for private events, while a fully equipped bike garage supports riders heading out on the region’s renowned road and gravel routes.

Sustainability-wise, Off Grid aims to tread as lightly as possible from its sourcing and design to natural spring water, solar-ready systems, on-site composting and drought-tolerant gardens – with plans underway for full renewable energy and expanded rainwater harvesting.

Located in the heart of La Garrotxa, a lesser-explored corner of Catalunya home to dormant volcanoes, ancient forests and some of the region’s most striking natural scenery. Curated hiking and cycling routes start directly from the house, with options suited to all levels. Experiences such as hot air ballooning, vineyard visits and local wine tastings can be arranged, while nearby towns including Besalú, Banyoles, and Girona offer rich history and local culture within easy reach.

Rooms from €150 per night including breakfast, based on two sharing. www.offgridgirona.com
