Staycations are one of life’s little luxuries, aren’t they? Here at H&N Magazine we love exploring the UK and finding hidden gems and hideaways on our doorstep.
We sent our intrepid explorer, Rachel McAlley and her family to Broadgate Farm Cottages (part of the Premier Cottages portfolio)in East Yorkshire, for a weekend of farm life, local walks, and a little retail therapy.

Broadgate Farm Cottages are part of a collection of small business that are passionate about making sure their guests have a wonderful experience at their properties. Marketed by Premier Cottages, who help spread the word about the collection of luxury cottages across the UK.
We arrived at Broadgate Farm Cottages on a Friday late afternoon, and were informed prior where to collect our keys. Furthermore, the owner Elaine popped by to introduce herself and to answer any questions we had about the farm, the local area, and where to get dinner.
Broadgate Farm Cart House 2

We were staying in Cart House 2, one of nine cottages on site, all situated in the middle of the working farm. Cart House 2 is a two-bedroom, two-bathroom, one-washroom, ground floor cottage, with outstanding views across the sheep-filled fields.
The cottage is vast, with a huge comfortable sitting room, luxury kitchen and dining (which can seat 12 guests), and private garden. In addition, the cottage itself has a wonderful wood-burning stove, which we didn’t use as it was one of the hottest weekends of the year! Equally, we didn’t need to use the underfloor heating, but can imagine that in late autumn and winter both of these would be a perfect addition to a stay.

We received a Broadgate Farm Cottages hessian bag, notepad, pen and a couple of locally produced beers to take home, which was a lovely, unexpected treat. With free Wifi throughout, a giant TV, DAB radio, and plenty of board games to play we weren’t likely to get bored during our stay. Elaine, the host provided a large guest book with details of local walks, maps of the area, and many restaurant and farm shop details. In fact, this guest book proved to be an essential part of our stay.

Once unpacked we ventured into the town of Beverley to pick up some supplies for breakfast, and assess where to go for dinner. Plus, there’s lots of takeaways in Beverley and they almost all deliver to Broadgate Farm, which we utilised on our first night.
The Bedrooms

Cart House 2, has two fantastic bedrooms, both with super king-sized beds, en-suite bathrooms, lots of towels, and complimentary bathroom toiletries. Moreover, the beds are extremely comfortable and we could have easily slept in each morning.
Most of our Saturday morning was spent leisurely having breakfast, while watching the sheep and lambs in the fields outside. Likewise, it was joyous to see the lambs jumping around, and playing in the sunshine.
We spent the afternoon strolling around Beverley, which has an exceptional Saturday market to visit. Firstly, there are some great shops in the town. Secondly, lots of fantastic cafes too. Thirdly, there’s even a shopping centre for more retail therapy. The day took us into the evening and we opted to dine in the local village rather than the town centre.

Walkington Village is just a mile from Broadgate Farm, and a lovely walk. We dined at The Ferguson Fawsitt, one of the pubs in the village. Filled with locals and holidaymakers, it was a fab little pub with good hearty food.
Back at Cart House 2 we had a couple of drinks outside on the private courtyard garden, before watching TV and then heading to bed. Sunday morning came all too soon, and as check out was at 10am we had to get up and crack on.
Our Thoughts

All-in-all we found Cart House 2 at Broadgate Farm Cottages one of the most beautiful, and relaxing places to stay. It was a break that we had enjoyed immensely as a family. Everything in the cottage was there to make us feel relaxed and comfortable. Additionally, the kitchen had everything we could have needed and more, the view was just perfection, and the décor was lovely.
Our stay would have cost around £599 for a 2-night stay, if we had booked later in the month, or into July the price would have increased. Prices do vary and change according to the season, school holidays, and bank holidays. Cart House 2 cottage catered for 4-guests, but could have extended up to 4+1, or when joined with Cart House 1 it could accommodate 9+3. See website for more info.
