Kevin and Nicola Tickle co-owners of Heft, Newton In Cartmel, took to the small screen last night (Thursday 03rd October) as the couple featured in Rick Stein’s Food Stories, broadcast on BBC2 at 7.00pm.
Food Stories is a Rick Stein culinary adventure around Great Britain to discover the food that we love to eat today. Having been a chef for over 50 years, Rick has come to realise that the food we eat tells a story about who we are. From traditional dishes to those that we have made our own – meeting producers, some of our best chefs and those keeping traditions alive to see how food brings us together.
The series is about his travels around Britain and Northern Ireland trying to get a handle on what British cuisine is today. Behind every dish, there’s a story, big or small. From fish & chips to pad Thai noodles, from chicken tikka masala to square sausages in a bun for breakfast on the streets of Glasgow.
As we catch up with Rick on his journey of discovery broadcast last night, we see the TV chef pay a visit to two northern foodie destinations, the Lake District and Yorkshire.

In the Lakes, Rick meets Kevin Tickle, a locally born and raised Michelin-starred chef who loves to forage. Rick arrives at Kevin and Nicola’s restaurant in Newton in Cartmel, Heft, where he spends time in the kitchen with Kevin, as he cooks a wild venison and mushroom dish topped with naughty sauce for Rick to try.
During his time in Cumbria Rick also meets up with Herdwick sheep farmer and author James Rebanks and visits an old friend on Morecambe Bay who is the custodian of a secret recipe for the best-potted shrimps around. While In Yorkshire, he discovers the story of Yorkshire pudding and visits the UK’s biggest tofu factory.
The full episode can be watched on BBC iPlayer here:

It’s people like the Tickle’s that he meets and the food and drink he discovers on his travels that have inspired him to create a raft of new recipes. Up to 30 of them feature in the series, while even more are celebrated in the accompanying Rick Stein’s Food Stories book.
Heft’s co-owners Kevin and Nicola Tickle commented: ‘‘It was a real pleasure to meet Rick Stein and spend some time chatting to him about what we’re trying to achieve at Heft and what makes the Lakes such a unique place to be. Having the time to share some insight into what makes this place tick and how we make use of local suppliers, many of whom we’ve known for years, people who like us take real pride in what they do. Like many of the people we work with everything we do is inspired by the landscape around us, and it was lovely to have the opportunity to share a little of that with Rick.’’
