Departing from London Paddington on the Great Western railway, you are treated to enticing glimpses of boating life on the Thames. As the train winds its way through the beautiful Berkshire countryside you can peep into the back gardens of the quintessentially English homes that line the River Thames, conjuring up images of garden parties and regattas of a bygone era.
When arriving at The Swan at Streatley, a 45-bedroom hotel that is part of the auspicious Coppa Club, you feel like you have been invited to stay at one of those elegant homes. The sprawling riverside hotel was refurbished in 2019 and every effort has been made to maximise its stunning location on the River Thames.

The perfectly maintained and well-established gardens provide a Wind in the Willows backdrop to every vista. From the Yoga Studio to the terrace restaurant, the river takes centre stage with the main characters being the boats and the wildlife resulting in an unbelievably relaxing environment.
Stay
You can choose between Countryside and Riverside view rooms at The Swan at Streatley. My Biggy Room with a balcony was previously occupied by Dame Helen Mirren DBE, for over a month when she was filming nearby. The spacious room with two double doors leading to a huge balcony overlooking the river benefitted from the morning sun. It was a delightful spot in which to indulge in some people watching whilst enjoying my morning coffee.

The rooms offer a calm, clean comfortable style, leaving the communal areas in the Coppa Club to flex the interior styling muscle. Here you will find rattan lampshades, cosy corners and an easy on-trend aesthetic that will make you feel instantly at home.
The hotel has rooms to suit all needs, including a Family Suite and Pet Friendly rooms. This is indeed dog walking country, and I noticed lots of dog bowls and treats for your furry friends to feel welcomed as well.
Things to do
Whether you like to be on the water or beside the river there is plenty to do. The hotel will help you arrange boat hire, SUPS or boat trips. It was interesting to see their list of “ What’s On”. They have everything from Moonlight SUPS nights to outdoor cinema events. The hotel really feels like the hub of the community giving it a warm, buzzy vibe.
The Swan at Streatley is on the Thames Pathway so for the walkers amongst you this makes for an excellent base from which to explore. You also have the picturesque villages of Goring and Streatley either side of the hotel offering traditional pubs, churches and boutiques to wander around.

A short drive from the hotel and you will find the National Trust property of Basildon Park. This 18th century bath stone property was lovingly refurbished in the 1950’s and now welcomes guests to come and enjoy the history and beautiful gardens. They have a Tea Room and the Toolshed kiosk for refreshments, and the Stable Yard shop for those green fingered amongst you to pick up some treats for the garden.
Alternatively, if you prefer your country walks with a side of wildlife you could visit Beale Wildlife Park. They offer three main areas of attraction including collections of small exotic animals, farm animals and birds and children’s play areas.
This hotel would make a lovely spot for those wanting a relaxing, riverside spot.
