Leeds is a thriving city at the heart of West Yorkshire. It’s a diverse region, home to many different cultures and ages making it a popular place to settle down for people at all stages of life. The city has four major universities meaning there is a regular influx of younger generations and then graduates who eventually live around Leeds.
Couple this with a developing economy and plenty of job prospects and there’s a booming first-time buyer market. There is a range of districts in and around the city that are attractive to first-time buyers, catering to all budgets and requirements. Below we consider some of the more popular areas of Leeds if you’re looking to buy your first home.

Horsforth
One of the most sought-after areas of Leeds for first-time buyers is Horsforth which sits northwest of the city centre. This popularity means that it’s one of the more expensive locations but for good reason. It has excellent transport links into the city centre if you need to commute, whilst also having a vibrant small town feel and easy access to the beautiful Wharfedale region and beyond. Average house prices are well beyond £300,000 but for a first-time buyer property, you’re more likely to be looking at upwards of £200,000.
Batley and Morley
A region of Leeds that is better suited for those with smaller budgets is Batley and nearby Morley which lie southwest of the city. Batley is technically a Wakefield postcode, whilst Morley is still an LS postcode – but both offer good value if you can live a bit further out of Leeds. This area has some of Leeds’ best new housing developments which are becoming increasingly popular with first-time buyers. Average house prices sit much closer to £200,000, with many smaller properties coming in above and below £150,000.
Chapel Allerton
Another very popular location for first-time buyers is Chapel Allerton which sits directly north of the city centre. It’s a lively, up-and-coming area which has really taken off in the last few years. The high street is home to several cafés, bars and restaurants, and the local shops and amenities are there for all to benefit. Much like Horsforth, it offers convenient access to the city centre and the north Leeds region. Average house prices are around £270,000, but you could be paying nearer £200,000 if you find the right deal.
Rothwell
On the southeast side of Leeds is Rothwell which offers something a little different from the above. It has the feeling of a more mature area, away from the hustle and bustle of some of the city’s busier regions. However, it still allows easy access to the city centre by car, bus or train from Woodlesford. Average prices are around £250,000, but you should be able to find a cheaper below £200,000 if you need to.
Pudsey
Finally, Pudsey is a popular region on the west side of Leeds on the way to Bradford. It’s one of the hottest areas for property development in the whole country which is a good sign if you’re looking to buy here. The town has a historic feel but offers something for people of all ages. Average house prices sit not too far above £200,000, so you should be able to secure a good investment for below £200,000 if you’re lucky.
