Best Drives from Sydney Airport for First-Time Travellers

Landing in Sydney and heading straight out on the road might seem like too much travel in one dose at first, but it’s actually a great way to slip out of the city and ease into a trip further afield. And because Sydney Airport sits close to major routes heading north, south, and west, there’s no need to battle the traffic of the CBD to get your adventure started. Simply sort your campervan hire near Sydney Airport, and you’ll be on your way.

But where should you go? To help make planning your trip easier, we’ve compiled a selection of the best drives from Sydney Airport for first-time travellers. These drives are easy, and you don’t need to rely on local knowledge to navigate them, meaning there’s no need to panic, rush, or overplan. Perfect for anyone heading out on the Australian road for the first time.

The Blue Mountains

Sydney Airport

The Blue Mountains are one of the most popular destinations from Sydney Airport, and for good reason. First of all, it only takes around 40 minutes to get here, giving you a manageable first day behind the wheel and a good feel for the road before heading any further.

Another reason this is such a popular spot straight from the airport is that you’re almost immediately given an opportunity to start exploring short walks and lookouts. Echo Point is the easiest place to view the Three Sisters from, offering clear paths and excellent viewing platforms. There’s also Scenic World, with cableways and boardwalks that are ideal if you want to cover more ground without tackling big climbs. Or, if you’re looking for something a little slower-paced, Leura Village is home to cafes and small shops all within walking distance.

Jervis Bay

Sydney Airport

The drive from Sydney Airport to Jervis Bay takes around 2.5 hours and takes you south. The main draw here is the water, so it’s a must for anyone who’s either looking to relax by the ocean or head out on the waves. Hyams Beach is one of the most popular, but if you’d rather go somewhere a little quieter, Greenfields Beach and Murrays Beach are good alternatives.

You’re also a 15-minute drive from Booderee National Park, where you’ll find plenty of bushwalks suiting all ranges of experience, along with beautiful picnic spots and some sheltered beaches. And, after a long day of exploring on land or water, Huskisson is the perfect place to kick back with a cold beer and a delicious meal.

Hunter Valley

Sydney Airport

If you’d rather explore rolling countryside over beaches, the Hunter Valley is the place to go. The drive here takes around 3 hours from Sydney Airport, and it leads you straight into one of New South Wales’ most famous areas.

Wine tasting is arguably the most popular activity here, but there’s more to this region than cellar doors. For instance, the Hunter Valley Gardens are easy to walk around and don’t require a full day, while towns like Pokolbin and Lovedale are close enough to walk between, so there’s no need to keep driving between stops. And, as you’d likely expect from an area famous for its wine, there are plenty of restaurants and pubs that make it easy to plan a relaxed evening out without having to worry about moving the campervan again.

The Central Coast

Sydney Airport

The Central Coast is often overlooked compared to other drives from Sydney Airport, but that actually makes it ideal for first-time travellers who might prefer something a little quieter. It’s also only 90 minutes from the airport, giving you the chance to get some driving experience in without feeling overwhelmed.

Terrigal Beach is one of the most beautiful spots to explore here, with a long beachfront, cafes, and a short walking track up to the Skillion Lookout for views back along the coast. Avoca Beach is another great option, with a wide stretch of sand that’s perfect for relaxing walks or rock pooling. Or, for something a bit more adventurous, you’re in the region that is home to Bouddi National Park, where you’ll find coastal tracks ranging in difficulty and some incredible ocean views.

The Southern Highlands

Another short drive from Sydney Airport, the Southern Highlands are just over an hour away and are home to a real mix of things to see and do. Bowral has a walkable town centre with bookshops and parks, including the Corbett Gardens, while the Bradman Museum is an enjoyable visit, even if you’re not deeply into cricket.

Fitzroy Falls is also in this area, where you’ll find short paths leading to lookouts over the waterfall and surrounding bushland just waiting to be explored.

Which Drive Should You Take?

Each of the drives from Sydney Airport we’ve included above is ideal for first-time travellers, but the one that works best for you will ultimately depend on your confidence levels. The Blue Mountains and the Central Coast are easy introductions to the road, while the drives to the Hunter Valley and Jervis Bay are ideal if you’d rather spend a bit more time getting comfortable behind the wheel.

Whichever you choose, you’re guaranteed to be in a beautiful part of Australia without venturing too far from Sydney Airport.
