Opened in 1878, Principle York is the Grande Dame of York, standing proudly just steps from the city’s bustling train station. Upon entering it is impossible not to marvel at the hotel’s interior, designed by award-winning architects Goddard Littlefair, combining late-Victorian grandeur with contemporary comforts.
From the awe-inspiring cast iron staircase and highly glazed original Victorian floors to the sweeping landscaped gardens, Principle York is a timeless, elegant retreat in the heart of the city.
As an historic Grade II listed building, Principle York has been an iconic feature welcoming rail travellers with its grand yellow Scarborough brick façade for almost 150 years. Designed by William Peachey of the North-eastern Railway, the hotel opened on 20 May 1878 as the Royal Station Hotel, York. It was an integral part of the new station and the railway company’s flagship hotel, featuring elegant, high-ceilinged banqueting rooms and 100 large bedrooms costing 14 shillings a night.

Today, the graceful 155-room hotel welcomes guests wanting to experience the splendour of a time gone by, whether in a sleek classic room, elegant deluxe room or luxurious suite. Each room is packed full of character and relaxing charm, and for those traveling with furry friends, dogs get their own beds and treats upon check-in.

Ideal for leisure and business travellers alike, the classic and deluxe bedrooms offer a contemporary space with artwork designed to pay homage to the hotel’s fascinating history. The larger Junior and Minster suites are stocked with every modern luxury, featuring magnificent views of the centuries-old York Minster and gardens surrounding the hotel.
For a tasteful celebration of classic British cuisine, The Refectory Kitchen and Terrace is the perfect place to dine. Ingredients are sourced locally from the finest regional suppliers, meaning every element is consciously considered. Guests can choose to dine in the beautifully lit dining room or enjoy al-fresco dining amongst the landscaped greenery of the outdoor terrace. The award-winning Chapter House Bar creates the perfect welcoming atmosphere to relax and unwind with a delicious range of classic and signature drinks, as well as serving many of York’s local craft ales.

A small, fully equipped gym includes a 13m swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam and sauna which is available to all guests.
During the summer months, the York Gin Garden pop-up bar sponsored by York Gin provides ample opportunity for lazy summer drinks in the garden, and throughout the year Thor’s Tipi brings on the party vibes with their legendary drinks tent and feasts by Yuzu Street Food.
Principle York is also home to one of the largest event centres in the north-east. The custom-built centre offers 10 rooms with state-of-the-art technology able to host up to 400 delegates.
