On Safari in The Yorkshire Dales

The Devonshire Arms will host its first ‘safari style’ conservation retreat this summer, presenting an exclusive opportunity for a limited number of guests to enjoy an insight into the fascinating flora and fauna on the Bolton Abbey estate during a two-night stay (11th-13th June)

The on conservation retreat in the Yorkshire Dales is a full itinerary of field-based activities, including bird watching, fishing and foraging, all led by experts in their field to maximise the insightful knowledge shared. Guests on the retreat will access areas of the privately-owned estate, ordinarily enjoyed only by the Cavendish family themselves, and employees of this Estate, which is the natural habitat of many endangered British wildlife species.

Activities on day one to connect with nature include a curlew and gull chick spotting moorland safari, led by the one of the specialist gamekeepers on the Estate, and an early evening foraging walk and workshop, led by Chris Bax (of ‘Bax Botanics’, creator of delicious alcohol-free spirits) He will help to uncover some surprising ingredients from nature’s pantry from the surrounding  fields and hedgerows, and share some harvesting and culinary tips.

Day two commences early with a dawn bird watching and listening walk, as our expert guide will be identifying the song of individual species, each one contributing to the full symphony of birdsong in Strid Wood. The fishing session is led by Estate riverkeeper, Oscar Boatfield, where guests will discover more about the fish species populating the river, and how our estate practices are contributing to future sustainability, as well as how to cast.

All this combined with a luxurious two-night stay at one of Yorkshire’s leading spa hotels, where guests will enjoy full board, with meals ranging from a convivial picnic lunch in a turf top hut or shooting house, to the à la carte, fresh seasonal delicacies, served in Burlington and delicious local produce in the Brasserie.  The group is kept intentionally small, with a maximum number of twelve guests to make sure that each wildlife experience is both interactive and immersive.

The conservation retreat in the Yorkshire Dales takes place between 11th – 13th June, includes all meals, and expertly guided activities and Land Rover driven transport around the Estate, along with accommodation, and the option to relax in the state-of-the-art thermal relaxation suite in the hotel’s award-winning spa facility, housed in an ancient barn just across the way from the main hotel. Full Yorkshire cooked breakfast is also included on both mornings.
