It is no secret that we love our county of Yorkshire, exploring and finding amazing new places is always exciting. So we could hardly contain our enthusiasm when Crown Spindle Mill entered our radar!
Crown Spindle Mill ticks so many of our boxes. There’s history, high end luxury accommodation, superb add on packages tailored to each guests visit, creating the most memorable stay, views for miles, glorious walks and hiking trails right outside the door and ….. resident Peacock, Percy to greet you on arrival.
Set amidst beautiful open countryside in the heart of Yorkshire Dales National Park, Crown Spindle Mill is a stunning former 18th century mill that has been converted into three luxury holiday homes.

So special is Crown Spindle Mill that we had a serious decision to make; do we keep this hidden gem to ourselves, or should we allow our readers and followers to share the joys of this hidden gem too?
Of course, we chose to share it! A place like this should not be kept a secret.
Let’s start with a word from owner Tracy.
“In 2019 we found this beautiful location in Embsay. Our first time walking the grounds, we felt excited about the future for this wonderful property. We have created a contemporary industrial style that pays tribute to the Mill. This historic engine, built in 1790, driven by 9.5-meter timber frame waterwheel had worked hard creating cotton and spindles.
We have in our design brought the tranquil beauty of our surroundings into these stunning suites. Every area has been carefully restored. The beautiful wooden original water wheel is on display inside the main kitchen and looks spectacular. One can see to the very depth of the base where the beck used to drive the wheel along with the overshot and middle shot.

Our resident Peacock, Percy is often to be seen perched on the Engine House balcony, with his
glorious colours adding to the landscape, and being located in the North Yorkshire Dales National Park, we are lucky to have many wild birds and wonderful starry night skies (special rules for residences in this area). This is all for the enjoyment of our guests of the Crown Spindle Mill.”
Location and Places to Visit

Crown Spindle Mill is in an exclusive country location, sitting high above the village of Embsay close to the North Yorkshire Moors, a designated National Park and it really is an area of outstanding beauty, very close to many great attractions and days out.
Ingleton Falls
The four-and-a-half-mile waterfall trail boasts some of the most spectacular waterfall and oak woodland scenery in the UK, nature at its best. As a year-round attraction, this is a circular walk in a waterfall wonderland, whatever the weather and is an ideal opportunity to explore nature and geological features including Thornton Force that falls 14 metres over limestone.
With rare and interesting plants and wildlife and its importance as a geological site, much of the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest by Natural England.
Ilkley
A short drive from the mill is Ilkley Moor with its imposing Cow and Calf Rocks. It’s a beautiful walk with panoramic views and lots of wildlife. Build up an appetite for Afternoon Tea at Betty’s!
Malham Cove
A visit to Malham Cove is also a great day out. Malham Cove is a huge curving amphitheatre shaped cliff formation of limestone rock. The vertical face of the cliff is about 260 feet high. The top of the cove is a large area of deeply eroded limestone pavement. Malham Cove looks out over the Village of Malham and has been attracting visitors for centuries.
Bolton Abbey
Nearby Bolton Abbey, this is the Yorkshire Estate of the Duke of Devonshire. At the heart of Bolton Abbey Estate lies the Priory Church and Ruins of an Augustinian Priory in its beautiful riverside setting, where the steppingstones were the crossing point for the lay workers at the Priory.
Skipton
Skipton is a five-minute drive away from the mill. A picturesque historic market town which still holds an outdoor market, has a buzzing high street full of unique independent shops and cafes and a castle that is perhaps the most complete medieval castle in England, survivor of the Wars of the Roses and the Civil War.
Haworth
Haworth is 35-minute drive from the mill. Home of the famous Brontë sisters and an undisputed literary mecca, attracting visitors from all around the world. With its historic cobbled Main Street, iconic parsonage and rolling moors, you feel you’ve stepped into another era.
Leeds
Leeds is a 45-minute drive from the mill. The unofficial capital of Yorkshire. A city at the heart of the action, bursting with life and cultural energy. There’s an award-winning national theatre and dance companies, a world-class arena and a thriving independent food scene you won’t find anywhere else. This is where big brands meet Victorian arcades, and the skyline is filled with breath-taking architecture. A great day out.
The Engine House at Crown Spindle Mill

During our stay, we were residents of The Engine House, a three-level suite with one luxurious bedroom level with its own balcony, and a spa bathroom on the ground floor which includes a sauna and a double sized spa bath with light therapy. The living room has a full kitchen, lounge and dining area and the space has been very well designed and finished to the highest quality, it is a wonderful, cosy bolthole.
