Picture this: clear blue water, white houses sparkling in the sun, and the smell of delicious food in the air. That’s what awaits you in the Greek Islands!

But truth be told, a LOT of people think they’re too expensive to visit. I’m here to tell you that’s NOT true! You can totally have an amazing time in Greece and a Greek Island without spending all your money. This article is your guide to doing just that. I’ll show you how to save money on everything from getting there to finding cool things to do.

Let’s get this money-saving adventure to the Greek Islands started!

Planning Your Budget-Friendly Escape

Greek Island on a budget

First things first, let’s talk about money. How much are you willing to spend?

It depends on several factors, such as:

How do you like to travel?

How long you’re going for?

When do you plan to go?

I like to make a simple budget before I go anywhere. I research and create rough estimates on how much I’ll spend daily on essentials like food, activities, and getting around.

Here’s a simple example:

ItemCost per Day
Accommodation$30
Food$25
Activities$15
Transport$10
Total$80

When is the Cheapest Time to Travel to the Greek Islands?

The cheapest time to travel to the Greek Islands is in the spring (April-May) or fall (September-October). The weather is still pleasantly warm, but the prices are lower because it’s not the busiest time of year. Plus, there aren’t as many crowds!

In the winter, a lot of places close down, so I don’t recommend going then. Not unless your travel goal is to find some moment of peace and solitude.

Where are the Cheapest Places to Travel to the Greek Islands?

Another big money-saver is choosing the “right” islands to visit. Everyone wants to go to the Greek Island of Mykonos and Santorini, but they are expensive. There are tons of other islands that are just as beautiful and way cheaper.

Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Naxos: Big, beautiful beaches, mountains, and cute towns.
  • Paros: Trendy like Mykonos but for less.
  • Milos: Popular for its unique rock formations and beaches.
  • Rhodes: History, beaches, and a cool old town.
  • Corfu: Green and lush, with a mix of beaches and mountains.

Getting There and Getting Around

Okay, now that you have your money and island picked out, let’s talk about getting to Greece.

By Plane

For cheaper plane tickets, I usually check websites like Skyscanner, Google Flights, and Kayak. I try to be flexible with my dates and airports. Sometimes, flying into a different city, like Athens or Thessaloniki, and then taking a ferry is a cheaper strategy. I often find great deals by searching flights that arrive at Athens international airport, which serves as a major hub for both local and international travel.

By Ferry

Once you’re in Greece, you’ll want to visit more than one island to maximize your itinerary. Ferries are the way to go!

There are different types of ferries: fast ones and slow ones. The slow ones are cheaper, so I usually pick those. You can also save money by traveling overnight on a ferry; that way, you don’t have to pay for a hotel for one night.

You can use Let’s Ferry to check for the most convenient ferry schedules and book online tickets to Piraeus Port, the largest harbour in Greece!

By Bus

Once you’re on an island, buses are usually the cheapest way to get around. You can also rent a scooter or car, but that will cost more.

Finding Affordable Places to Stay

Where you stay and on which Greek Island, can make a big difference in how much you spend.

Here are my preferred budget-friendly options:

  • Hostels: These are great if you’re traveling alone and want to meet people. You can sleep in a dorm room for cheap.
  • Guesthouses: These are usually family-run and offer simple, clean rooms for a good price.
  • Camping: If you’re on a super tight budget, camping is a great option. Just make sure you know the rules about camping in Greece.
  • Airbnb: You can often find apartments or studios for a good price, especially if you’re traveling with a group.

To save more:

  • Visit during the shoulder season, which is spring or fall.
  • Book your accommodation in advance.
  • Stay in less popular areas.
  • Look for accommodations with a kitchen so you can prepare your own meals.

Eating Well Without Breaking the Bank

Speaking of meals, Greek food is fantastic! The best part is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy and savour this experience.

I love to eat like the locals do. You can find yummy and cheap street food like souvlaki and gyros.

As mentioned, I like to cook some of my own meals (whenever possible) to save even more money. I go to the local markets and buy fresh fruits and vegetables. I also pack lunches for day trips so I don’t have to buy expensive food at tourist spots.

Here are some of my favourite cheap Greek dishes:

  • Moussaka: A baked dish with eggplant, potatoes, and meat sauce.
  • Pastitsio: A baked pasta dish with ground meat and béchamel sauce; it’s kind of Greek’s version of lasagne.
  • Fasolia: A white bean soup.
  • Yemista: Vegetables stuffed with rice and herbs.
  • Tzatziki: A savoury yogurt-based dip with cucumber and garlic.
  • Greek Salad: Tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, olives, and feta cheese.

Enjoying the Islands Without Overspending

There are plenty of fun things to do in the Greek Islands that don’t cost much money. Of course, my favourite budget-friendly activity in Greece is going to the beach! Swimming and sunbathing are FREE!

I also love to hike. Many of the islands have beautiful trails with amazing views. You can also walk around the villages and towns, check out the churches, and soak up the atmosphere.

Watching the sunset is a must-do in the Greek Islands. Find a good spot and enjoy the show!

There are other cheap things to do:

  • Go to local museums (look for free days).
  • Check out local festivals and celebrations.
  • Converse with the locals and learn a few basic Greek words.

Essential Money-Saving Tips

Before you go, here are a few more tips to keep in mind:
