European Summer Holiday Destinations to Try This Year

Summer is the season for heading off on a well-earned break. It’s the time to sit back, relax and enjoy some time in the sun.

Whether you’ve been planning for months or are still considering last-minute holidays, there are so many places to choose from this year. Here are some top European destinations to add to your summer holiday shortlist.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Slovenia might not be the first country that comes to mind, but this charming capital offers a fascinating blend of old-world charm and modern attractions.

Pedestrian-friendly streets make exploring easy and enjoyable. You can wander through the cobbled streets, visit Ljubljana Castle perched above the city, and relax in one of the many cafes lining the river. Tivoli Park is a gorgeous spot where locals enjoy the sun.

Something that sets Ljubljana apart is its proximity to stunning nature. You’re less than an hour’s drive away from Lake Bled, one of Europe’s most picturesque spots. And it’s a real feast for the eyes.

Lake Garda, Italy

If you’re dreaming of a summer by the water, Lake Garda in northern Italy is a superb option. It’s the largest lake in the country, surrounded by dramatic mountains and charming towns – an idyllic backdrop for a relaxing holiday.

You can spend your days exploring the picturesque lakeside towns and villages. Sirmione is known for its thermal baths and the ancient Scaligero Castle, but there are plenty of others, like Peschiera del Garda, which have a great atmosphere.

If you’re more adventurous, there’s everything from water sports on the lake to hiking and cycling trails in the surrounding hills. And foodies will no doubt appreciate the many local trattorias offering fresh, Mediterranean cuisine and local wines.

Porto, Portugal

Portugal’s second-largest city is one of the more underappreciated destinations in Europe. Situated on the banks of the Douro River, Porto is famous for its port wine and stunning riverside views.

Wander through the city’s historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you’ll find beautiful old buildings and a maze of narrow streets. For a truly local experience, visit the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river. Take a guided tour and sample some of the finest port wines.

Porto’s outstanding food scene is also worth noting. Indulge in the city’s signature dish, Francesinha, or enjoy fresh seafood at one of the many waterfront restaurants.

Valencia, Spain

Another under-appreciated location, Valencia, is well worth considering. The city’s futuristic architecture, like the City of Arts and Sciences, provides a striking contrast to its historic centre, where you’ll find charming streets and squares.

Some of the highlights of the city are its beaches, which aren’t far from the city centre. The wide sandy shores of Malvarrosa Beach are the perfect spot to relax under the Mediterranean sun.

After a day at the beach, you can savour traditional Valencian paella in one of the many seaside restaurants, taking in the fresh seafood and endless views of the sea. Sounds dreamy, for a summer holiday doesn’t it?
