Upper Austria, right at the Danube River, might still be slightly off the tourist map in the UK – but that’s exactly what makes it so intriguing. Picture yourself cycling through postcard-perfect nature along the water, then relax in a top-notch spa, or enjoy the tranquillity of the Alps one day and learn all about cutting-edge technology at the Museum of Future the next.
This region offers the perfect mix of hilly landscapes, beautiful lakes, outdoor activities and city life. No day will every be the same here. Upper Austria is also an easy destination to reach from the UK with direct flights from London-Stansted to Linz twice a week and daily connections via Vienna and Frankfurt, making it perfect for both weekend trips and longer holidays (click here for flight details).
Let us show you today what makes Upper Austria truly stand out.
A city break in Linz: History, robots and a street art gallery

Upper Austria’s capital Linz might not be your cliché city destination. It’s slightly more edgy than others – but it’s 100% real. The city combines history-filled streets and sights with modern attractions such as the Ars Electronica Center (a futuristic museum dedicated to everything AI and robots). And then there’s, of course, the trendy Mural Harbor, with one of the largest graffiti galleries in Europe. An annual event highlight is the Ars Electronica Festival featuring exhibitions, performances and concerts around the city (3-7 September).

Danube Region: A biking paradise in a postcard-perfect setting

Love exploring on two wheels? Look no further than the Danube Region. Home to the first of six sections of the Danube Cycle Path (from Passau in Germany to Vienna), it is a mecca for biking fans. Sporty travellers can either cycle the whole distance or take their pick from numerous car-free excursion destinations, including the new UNESCO World Heritage Danube Limes tour (the digital tour guide provides insights and tales from the region’s Roman past). For postcard-perfect vistas, head to the Danube Loop Schlögen.
