A Traditional Dickensian Christmas in Florida

Amelia Island, on the north-east coast of Florida, will once again be transformed into Victorian England at the time of Dickens during its 9th annual Dickens on Centre festival, 7-10 December 2023.

Inspired by the famous Charles Dickens story, ‘A Christmas Carol,’ historic downtown Fernandina Beach is transformed into a classic English village, with costumed characters, themed entertainment and performances. The family-friendly Dickensian Christmas event is free to the public and all participants are encouraged to wear Victorian dress.

Dickens Illuminated Procession kicks off the festival on 7 December and over three days there is Victorian inspired entertainment on two stages, as well as throughout the streets.

Other highlights include Fezziwig’s Courtyard, a delightful and nostalgic experience that transports visitors to a bygone era of joy, generosity, and holiday cheer, much like the spirit of Mr. Fezziwig in Charles Dickens’ timeless tale, a magical, 3D drone show that creates a story in the sky, strolling carol singers, and the Enchanted Village, a life-size snow globe experience featuring refreshments provided by The Portly Gentleman Tavern. Dickens After Dark is the most exclusive Victorian costume party of the season! This VIP only, 21 and over soiree, is complete with stilt walkers, jugglers, an amazing Fire & Ice Show by Kristen Sparrow Circus, and live music.

The Dickens on Centre event is due to the British heritage and ownership of Amelia Island in the eighteenth century. The island was named in honour of Princess Amelia, daughter of George II of Great Britain, by the Governor of Georgia, James Oglethorpe in 1735. It did not lapse into British hands until the Spanish colony of Florida was traded for British Cuba in 1763 as a result of the Treaty of Paris.
