A Sunday Roast and a Proper Cup of Tea Onboard Princess Cruises

A Sunday Roast and proper cup of tea… Princess Cruises reveals the creature comforts Brits crave most when on holiday.

A record number of Brits are choosing cruise holidays to destinations near and far, and new research from Princess Cruises and Cruise.co.uk reveals that, even when seeking an escape, there are some home comforts that Brits just can’t go without, including a Sunday roast.

A recently commissioned survey reveals that even though 69% of holidaying Brits describe themselves as adventurous travellers, almost two in five (39%) are seeking familiar food and drink while abroad.

Sunday roast

British staples such as a cup of tea, Sunday roasts and full English breakfast are high on the list of creature comforts guests crave while on holiday, with the top 5 comprising:

  1. Tea (24%)
  2. Sunday Roast (22%)
  3. Afternoon Tea (16%)
  4. Full English Breakfast (15%)
  5. Fish & Chips (15%)

These survey findings were unveiled ahead of the ‘Good Food Show at Sea’, which is currently taking place over a two-week roundtrip cruise from Southampton aboard Sky Princess. For the first time ever, Good Food is bringing its renowned culinary experiences to sea featuring cookery demonstrations by celebrity chefs, tutored tastings, cocktail-making classes, and hands-on workshops.

Celebrity TV chefs include British fan-favourite duo, John Torode and Lisa Faulkner. John Torode, a hugely popular and influential figure on the UK culinary circuit, is best known as the co-host and judge on BBC1’s MasterChef, Celebrity MasterChef, and Junior MasterChef. John will be sailing with his wife Lisa Faulkner, a cookery author, TV presenter and actor.

Other notable guests on the line-up include:

  • Gennaro Contlado – widely known as the Italian legend who taught Jamie Oliver all he knows about Italian cooking.
  • Marcus Bean – a chef, author, and presenter who taught himself to cook and went on to win Iron Chef UK on Channel 4.
  • Greg Rutherford – a former Olympic Gold Medalist, World and European Athletics Champion, who has since gone on to become a TV presenter and appeared on Celebrity Masterchef, where he won the 2019 title.
  • Rachel Allen – growing up in Dublin, Rachel went to the Ballymaloe Cookery School at the age of 18, paving the way to become a cookery writer and TV presenter.

Sami Kohen, Princess Cruises vice president food & beverage, shared some insight on how Princess Cruises’ onboard cruise experience is tailored to cater to the UK market.

He said: “We know that whilst British guests love to explore new destinations, there are certain home comforts they miss. Our itineraries that are popular with British guests feature more of their favourite foods and beverages and offer familiar touches such as kettles with English breakfast tea in staterooms.”

“Additionally, we enhance the onboard experience with events such as afternoon tea across the fleet, including the Royal Afternoon Tea with Royal Chef Darren McGrady on our newest ship, Sun Princess.”

Tony Andrews, managing director of cruise.co.uk, said: “The beauty of a cruise holiday lies in combining the thrill of exploring new destinations with the comfort of enjoying familiar flavours. Whether it’s a classic Sunday roast, a freshly brewed cup of tea or a full English breakfast, guests can indulge in the traditional dishes they love – while also sampling cuisine from across the globe. The culinary variety onboard ensures there’s something to satisfy every palate.”
