7 of the Best European Solstice Escapes

As the summer solstice approaches, bringing the longest day of the year on June 21st, travellers are increasingly looking for destinations that make the most of Europe’s extended daylight hours.

Riviera Travel’s latest booking data reveals that demand is heavily concentrated around scenic European escapes, with just 15 top-performing European itineraries accounting for 50% of all recent website bookings. Growing appetite for picturesque landscapes heroes’ destinations such as Lake Como, Provence, Paris, and the Douro Valley, underlining strong appetite for scenic European solstice escapes that come into their own in the golden light of solstice.

Ahead of the summer solstice, Joanne Lynn, Head of European Product, and Katherine Greaves, Head of Product Cruise at Riviera Travel, highlight seven of the most beautiful places across Europe to spend the longest evening of the year.

7 Places To Spend The Summer Solstice In Europe

Stockholm, Sweden

Joanne Lynn, Head of European Product at Riviera Travel, says: “Stockholm is a wonderful place to experience the summer solstice because the light lingers so late into the evening. With the city spread across islands and waterways, the sun reflects beautifully off the water and gives the whole skyline a soft golden glow.

“Whether you’re walking through Gamla Stan or sitting by the waterfront, there’s a real sense of the day stretching out for hours. It feels calm, bright and incredibly atmospheric at that time of year.”

Norwegian Fjords, Norway

Joanne Lynn, Head of European Product at Riviera Travel, says: “Few places feel more special at solstice than Norway, where the light lasts deep into the evening and the fjords take on a completely different character. The still water, steep mountain sides and huge open skies make everything feel more dramatic.

“It’s not the kind of sunset that disappears quickly. The light lingers, shifts and softens, which makes the whole experience feel slower and more memorable.”

Lake Como, Italy

Joanne Lynn, Head of European Product at Riviera Travel, says: “Lake Como is one of those destinations that seems made for golden hour. As the sun begins to drop behind the mountains, the light on the lake becomes softer and warmer, and the reflections across the water are stunning.

“Places like Bellagio feel especially beautiful in the evening, when the pace slows and people gather at the water’s edge. It has a very timeless, romantic feel that suits the longest day perfectly.”

Provence, France

Joanne Lynn, Head of European Product at Riviera Travel, says: “Provence is famous for its light, and summer solstice is one of the best times to experience it. The evening sun gives the countryside a rich golden colour, whether you’re in the hills of the Luberon, by the coast in Cassis or sitting out in Aix-en-Provence.

“It’s a region that lends itself to slower evenings outdoors, and that’s part of its appeal. The combination of warm light, beautiful landscapes and relaxed atmosphere makes it ideal for marking the longest day of the year.”

Zadar, Croatia

Katherine Greaves, Head of Product Cruise at Riviera Travel, says: “Zadar is a brilliant choice for summer solstice because the sunset is such a focal point of the city. Watching the sun go down along the waterfront is special in itself, but contemporary art installations such as the Sea Organ and Sun Salutation make it feel even more memorable.

“There’s a real sense of occasion as day turns to evening there. It feels lively, visual and different to many other coastal spots in Europe.”

Paris, France

Katherine Greaves, Head of Product Cruise at Riviera Travel, says: “Paris always feels cinematic in the evening, and around the summer solstice the city really comes into its own. As the light softens over the Seine, the bridges, rooftops and landmarks take on a completely different atmosphere.

“It’s one of the most iconic places in Europe to spend a long summer evening because it combines that classic city skyline with the romance of the river. There’s something very easy and timeless about simply watching the light change in Paris.”

Douro Valley, Portugal

Katherine Greaves, Head of Product Cruise at Riviera Travel, says: “The Douro Valley is especially beautiful at sunset, when the light falls across the vineyard terraces and the river begins to glow. It has a very peaceful feel in the evening, with the landscape opening up around you in every direction.

“It’s a lovely place to spend the summer solstice because the scenery does all the work. The combination of rolling hills, warm light and views across the valley makes it feel both dramatic and deeply relaxing.”

“Summer solstice is a reminder that sometimes the simplest travel moments are the most memorable. These are the places where the setting, the light and the atmosphere come together in a way that feels genuinely special.”
