Keeping a bedroom tidy can be an ongoing challenge, especially if the person sleeping in it hasn’t developed the right habits. But staying on top of the problem can yield significant mental health benefits, and encourage the sort of discipline and diligence that can be so useful in other areas of life.
But understanding why this is an important problem is just the first step. How, exactly, might you go about tidying a bedroom, and ensuring that it stays that way?
Start With a Thorough Declutter and Clear Organisation Plan
To begin with, you’ll need to make sure that you have the minimum possible junk in the room. A major declutter can provide you with the blank slate you need, and make future tidying sessions painless.

You might divide your belongings into three distinct piles, comprising things to be discarded, donated, and kept. Prioritise the things that really get in the way, like the clutter beside your bed.
Since you’re only decluttering a single room, you might find this quite straightforward. But resist the temptation to simply put your clutter into another part of the home. If you do that, then you’re only moving the problem, rather than solving it.
Make the Most of Bedroom Storage Space
The space you have available can be repurposed for storage, especially if you’re not making efficient use of it. Look at storage for beneath the bed, over the doors, and within existing items of furniture. Drawer dividers can be excellent for accessing things in a hurry, and generally reducing the sense of chaos in a given space. At the same time, you might look at bespoke furniture, including fitted wardrobes, as a means of squeezing the maximum possible utility from the space you have available.

Create Simple Storage Zones for Everyday Items
The items that you use every day should each have their own little corner of the space to call home. Documents might live in a particular lever-arch file, while personal items like jewellery might have a special box. When everything is stored in a clearly defined place, you’ll find it much easier to track things down when you need them. If you find that you can’t remember where to put a given thing, then you might set aside a specific box for miscellaneous items. The chances are good that you’ll need that mysterious mechanical part in the future, and having a dedicated space might allow you to hold onto it.

Build Habits That Prevent Clutter From Returning
Finally, we should consider that effective tidying isn’t just about improving the room and what’s in it. You’ll also need to improve yourself, by forming the right habits. Make a point of performing short daily tidying ‘sprints’, of around five minutes. You might be surprised at how much you can achieve in the time you already have available, especially if you’re consistent about it.
