What Is Ergonomics – And Why It Is Important For Your Health

Ergonomics is the process of making sure that products and spaces are designed around the human body. This not only helps to make products and spaces more comfortable, but also helps prevent long-term injuries caused by bodily strain.

Nowadays, almost every product and public space will have been ergonomically designed with careful attention put into everything from where to put handles on doors to where to put buttons on an electric toothbrush. However, ergonomics is still a learning process and some products and spaces are still not as well-designed as they should be. There are also cases where the perfect ergonomic design is unique to the individual – in which case, it’s up to ourselves to pick the right products and use them correctly. This post explains more.

Your chair

Spend long periods sat in a chair? It could be important to make sure that the chair is ergonomically designed. Poor ergonomics while seated could result in back pain and cramps, which may turn into permanent aches.

Ergonomic office chairs and ergonomic gaming chairs are designed to provide maximum comfort and prevent such pains. Ergonomic features include height adjustment, lower back support and adjustable armrests. It’s worth investing in one of these chairs if you are often sat down for long periods.

Ergonomics is also important when driving for long periods. Make sure that your seating position is adjusted properly to provide maximum comfort.

Your desk

When it comes to desks, it’s important that the desk is placed squarely in front of you – you shouldn’t have to twist your body to reach something on your desk, as this can lead to muscular and spinal repetitive strain injuries over time.

Height adjustable desks and height adjustable workbenches can also be worth looking into. Whether you’re sitting down or standing up while using them, you can adjust them to the right height so that you don’t have to lean over them. This can prevent back injuries.

Your shoes

If you’re walking or running around for a long period, you need to make sure that your shoes are providing your feet with the right support. Many shoes are not designed to provide such support – the worst offenders being high heel shoes and winklepickers. You are much better off choosing shoes that have been ergonomically designed.

When running long distances, it’s recommended that you buy a pair of running shoes. These shoes are designed to cushion impact and allow free movement as you run. General sneakers are meanwhile some of the best shoes for walking in.

Your bed

It’s also worth considering your bed and your sleeping position. Did you know that certain mattresses are better for certain sleeping positions? If you’re a side sleeper, a softer mattress is likely to be better for you, as it moulds around the curves of your body. If you sleep on your back, a firmer mattress is likely to be more comfortable as it provides better support for your spine. A comfortable night’s sleep isn’t just important for your sleep quality, but can actually reduce your risk of developing various joint and muscular injuries. It’s therefore worth investing in the right mattress.
