During summer losing more hair than usual is a biological fact. You aren’t losing your mind if you have noticed more hair in your shower drain during summer. For an average person, they could shed 50-100 strands of hair on an average day.

However, seasonal hair loss is something else and should not be ignored. It is postulated that summer hair loss affects women more than men. Being observant of what is normal and what is abnormal is vital for preventing further hair loss.

Most of the hairs are in the resting stage of their growth cycle during summer. An average strand of hair has a life cycle between two and six years. Hairs in the resting phase are prone to shedding and falling out because they are prepared for regrowth.

Our bodies, in response, produce less melatonin, which affects hormone levels in the scalp. This means many more hairs are in an extended resting phase than usual, resulting in an increased hair fall. After these hairs fall out, they will be replaced as new hair follicles take their place. Hence, the growth cycle starts anew.

The level of testosterone in your body also affects hair loss in summer. Testosterone is mainly a male hormone, but it can also be found in females in trace amounts. Its levels rise above average in females during summer, which leads to unusual hair loss. Following are some additional causes that may result in summer hair loss;

  • Recent weight gain
  • Recovering from an illness
  • Giving birth
  • Stopping hormonal birth control medicine

However, if you notice an above-average thinning of hairs in specific areas, like the crown or temples, then you should seek help from your physician. You may be losing your hair due to something other than the natural seasonal cycle.

For both males and females, the pattern baldness occurs in the crown or temple areas. Some females begin showing signs of hair loss in smaller patches, which then spreads to the crown and temples. If you notice long-term hair thinning, increased hair loss, or a receding hairline, it may be due to a medical condition. Please consult your doctor before hair loss becomes irreversible.

3 Ways to Look After Your Hair

1.      Apply Coconut Oil

You should apply warm – not hot – coconut oil to your hair. Rub it deep in the scalp, at least once a week, to give your hair the nourishment it needs during summer. Coconut oil keeps your hair safe from exposure to the sunlight, excessive heat from styling or exposure to seawater. Coconut oil is natural and suitable for all ages, genders, and hair types.

2.      Be Protective of Your Hair

Reduce the excessive heat styling that you do to your hair. Excessive heat exposure can cause your hair to become thin and brittle. If you are styling your hair, it may help to apply a heat protectant spray before heating up your hair styling tool. Simple precautions can go a long way to saving your hair.

3.      Diet and Hydration

A diet with enough vitamins and nutrients is necessary for hair growth. It can help limit hair loss in both men and women. You may eat things like;

  • Spinach, sweet potatoes, carrots and kale for moisture and growth
  • Whole grains, seafood, leafy greens and meat for a healthy scalp
  • Citrus fruits, peppers and strawberries for collagen production

Make sure to keep yourself hydrated with clean drinking water, especially in the summer. Limit your alcohol consumption. As long as you follow these directions and care for your hair, they will remain healthy for a long time.
